  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.
  • We hope the site problems here are now solved, however, if you still have any issues, please start a ticket in Contact Us

Why does secular music get so many posts and threads on Christian forums?

Why not? There are opportunities for followers of Christ to interact with people who share our beliefs and with people who believe differently. We can interact on a huge variety of topics, from all types of music, to evolution, to politics, to clothing; etc. Who knows where these interactions could lead?

So, I repeat my question: Why not?

Maybe because there are more secular bands than Christian bands, because those secular bands are (for the most part) more talented than most Christian bands, and because there are many Christians who don't feel convicted to listen only to Christian artists.

Because it would look a whole lot worse if we actually went to a band's website & forum and said stuff like:
"Is ____ Christian!?!11!!!?!"
"(insert junky band here) & (here) are the best evaaa!!111!!! They are so Jesus-centric!"
"Is it okay for Christians to listen to Metallica?"

Yeah.
That's why there are so many threads in the secular music forum.

Well, I understand what JesusWasn'tWhite is saying, but from what I have read I haven't seen any of that happening. It seems more like people are praising secular bands and artists.

Not feeling conviction from Christian artists, but you do from secular artists? What type of conviction do you feel from listening to secular artists?

I see this happening in many of these music-discussion threads. When will we be able to discuss a band's talent- or lack, thereof- without others thinking we're "bashing another Christian" or, in this case, "praising secular bands".

There are secular bands out there that simply have amazing talent, and create amazing music. Do they deserve praise for that? Absolutely! Why not?

Being a musician for the better part of the last 20 years, I have discovered that I have a difficult time worshipping or "feeling conviction" while listening to any music. I end up focusing on the mechanical aspects of the song itself, and not the object of my adoration (God). Sorry for veering off-topic there, but I had to make an attempt to address the whole "conviction" thing.

yoursXtruely merely said he wasn't convicted to limit his music to Christian artists. He didn't say he felt any sort of conviction from secular artists.

I think he mistankenly believes that "secular" is somehow analogous to "unchristian." That would explain his desire for us to not listen to secular music. People like the OP need to be educated about things, this being one of them. They need to be shown that secular only means not explicitly religious, and that music can be very good and very unoffensive without explicitly being religious.

God used heathens to build His temple.

Sometimes heathens do a much, much better, superior, more excellent job at certain things than Christians.

What makes more sense in the grand scheme of things? A pastor or missionary that sucked at preaching but could churn out tha jammin' tunes? Or Christians who could focus on doing the Word & leave the jammin & churning out the high quality tunes to the heathens?

Christian music is just of much lesser musical quality.

Because as a genre it's boring and limiting.

Where is the christian jazz? Although I probably shouldn't listen to a lot of jazz since nearly every hard-bop artist was smoking the devil's weed at the time.

Christian funk? Probably doesn't exist.
Christian drum and bass/jungle/grime? Not here either.
Christian hip-hop? Forget it.
