Why Trump is funny and Colbert is canceled

President Donald Trump is often hailed as funny. While campaigning, his speeches at rallies and appearances on podcasts and news programs often elicited peals of laughter from rallygoers and viewers.

During his first few press conferences upon returning to the White House earlier this year, even the reporters questioning him frequently found themselves chuckling or laughing. While the president does have a sharp wit and an amusing rhetorical style, much of what he says is not a “joke” in the traditional sense; rather, he just says what’s on his mind — and, incidentally, what’s on most others’ minds, too.

The reason this inspires laughter is because the past several years (anywhere from the past four years to the past few decades, depending on your sense of humor, where you fall on the political spectrum, etc.) have been increasingly restrictive in terms of what can be said, even jokingly. In the 1950s, Bugs Bunny slapping on lipstick and donning a dress and wig in order to fool Elmer Fudd was an obvious joke: by the end of the 2010s, such humor was labeled “transphobic” and would have come along with a Facebook or Twitter ban.

Given the regime of censorship and atmosphere of thought-policing prevalent over the last however-many-years, pervading even the world of comedy, it is a relief to hear someone else voice a “cancellable” thought that you yourself were thinking — it’s even more of a relief when the man so nonchalantly speaking his mind is the U.S. president.

That is laughable though some of the nicknames he gives his adversaries can be humorous. He has a very poor sense of humor.

While campaigning, his speeches at rallies and appearances on podcasts and news programs often elicited peals of laughter from rallygoers and viewers.
That's not because he is humorous but because his followers find humor in some of the horrible things he says (They laughed when he made fun of a handicapped man)
During his first few press conferences upon returning to the White House earlier this year, even the reporters questioning him frequently found themselves chuckling or laughing.
Were they laughing because he was trying to be funny or because he showed no understanding of what the subject was.

Many times you see foreign leaders attempting to hide their laughs after Trump makes himself look stupid.

If Trump hosted a late night show after his term is up, the ratings would go through the roof.

If it gets him out of the white house he can start right now.

Trump's speech after riding in the garbage truck was genuinely hilarious, especially the non-political parts. Had some profanity, but his reaction at seeing how high that first step was on the truck range true, which is why it was funny.

I can't say whether Colbert was funny or not, or if his humor transcends politics. I do know the late night market is shrinking, and even though he had the highest percentage of viewers in that time slot, there are fewer viewers. Colbert's show, by all accounts, loses money, so it's not surprising that it's being canned. If it was just Colbert being canned, they'd have a new host. That the entire show is headed toward cancelation is the telling part. That suggests the problem is more late night TV than Colbert. By now, Colbert is probably catering to his core audience, so if he'd gone "off brand" he's be apt to lose that high percentage of viewers.

It used to be that late night TV was the only thing on. I'd watch it when I couldn't sleep, usually when sick. But the last time I stayed up to take a fever reducer, I didn't watch late night TV. Instead, I watched reruns of Storage Wars. These days we have choices that didn't exist half a century ago, which means if we want to watch TV at that hour, it doesn't have to be what the networks broadcast. And I think that's what's going on with declining viewers in that time slot.

Yep not everybody is into the whole identity politics in their every breathing moment. People like that can suck the life not only out of the room but become toxic to themselves after while. Colbert had his day. He is long overdue to change his shtick and try to rely on something other than politics. Like spreading his wings and finding some talent without the tired political jokes. It really is time to move on and shake off that persona. He should see it as a favor. I hope he can break himself out of that mold he typecast himself into.

But more seriously--what does being funny have to do with being presidential?

Being humorous is an admirable quality it a president. Lincoln, both Roosevelts, Truman, Kennedy, Regan, Clinton and Obama are well regarded for it.
