Alright, maybe 20,000. Some say 40,000. I don't know. I found a web page once which claimed to list every Christian denomination, but the page was so long my little hard drive crashed trying to load it.

Try 11m and that is based on counting all 287 catholic denominations.

A breach of sacred contract can't be right, can it? The See of Rome agreed in Holy Council that it would be wrong to change the creed unilaterally, and then it changed it unilaterally. Even by the lower standards of secular moral law that's wrong.

What alternative did he show by example? The majority of what Jesus said was not directly referenced in the Old Testament. Do you throw out most of what Jesus taught because it wasn't "scriptural"? God forbid.

As much as I like Akin, his problem with this article is that he boils Sola Scriptura down to private interpretation.

In reality, the vast majority of Protestants read and interpret scripture within a confessional context, giving full appreciation to the importance of all the historical figures who have gone before us in understanding and interpreting it. The difference is that we do not accord them any level of necessary infallibility.

There are churches where the laity is taught that they are not to read Scripture, but rather are to let the church leadership tell them what it really says, and then conduct their lives in accordance with what that leadership has told them, rather than verifying it through their own scriptural study. And no, I am not referring to the RCC; I am referring instead to some denominations and sects in the radical area that claim to be the sole means of anyone's obtaining salvation. Those denominations and sects stress that Scripture is too confusing for the common person to understand, so the leadership of those churches and sects will tell them what they need to know (one of those sects went so far as to attempt to tell me that I was not to read any portion of Scripture that they didn't give me prior approval to read).

Reading Scripture doesn't have to run contrariwise to tradition. But the proper and continual study of Scripture can quite possibly save its readers from walking into traps that they didn't even realize were there waiting to ensnare them. Those radical denominations and sects which claim that it is only through letting them tell us what Scripture says rather than reading that Scripture for ourselves can be infinitely more dangerous to our spiritual welfare than a church that practises tradition alongside Scripture.
