  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

No, poverty does not justify the killing of a baby. Everyone knows that killing babies is wrong, it is also a crime. I don't get your point...is there anyone on this forum that has said something to that effect?

Some people use the word "baby" to describe a human fetus. The word fetus means "young one". So if we are talking about a horse fetus, we are talking about a horse "young one". Therefore, a human fetus is a human young one, aka baby.

If poverty is so horrible that some think it justifys killing a baby, why not just kill two birds with one stone ?

This suggestion could be viewed as misogynism in the extreme, given the fact that the baby's existence involved a third party, i.e. a man.

@HyacinthBouquet: I'm well aware that some people choose the wrong terms to deliberately lie.

OP fixed now.

As i do not think the killing of a fetus is wrong, i see no connection between that and murdering a mother.

I cannot see the argument for killing a baby if you cannot also have an argument for killing the mother also. Both are human beings. Just one does not have a voice.

It depends what stage of pregnancy we are discussing. If it is a very early stage, then I would agree with you. However, when the term "baby" is used to describe a fetus at 20 weeks or even 16 weeks then I am not sure how that can be described as a lie.

An interesting thing happened when I went for an ultrasound scan at 12 weeks of pregnancy. The doctor placed the probe on my abdomen and pointed to the monitor "There's your baby." he said. This was also my experience with my next child. This time the sonographer was a woman but she used the same terminology to describe my unborn child.

Well, babies have a voice, so i don't know what you're going on about again...

Babies - fetuses - born prematurely do too. I've heard of babies born at 20 weeks who cried.

@HyacinthBouquet: A baby is a child that has been born. Nothing else. This is how the word is *defined*. Otherwise it is an embryo in the early, a fetus in the later stages of pregnancy.
Calling a fetus a baby is like calling an egg a chicken. You can do it, but it is wrong, misleading and just makes no sense for any meaningful discussion.

Webster's online dictionary:
Baby

Noun

1. A very young child (birth to 1 year) who has not yet begun to walk or talk; "isn't she too young to have a baby?".
2. (slang) sometimes used as a term of address for attractive young women.
3. A very young mammal: "baby rabbits".
4. The youngest member of a group (not necessarily young); "the baby of the family"; "the baby of the Supreme Court".
5. An immature childish person; "he remained a child in practical matters as long as he lived"; "stop being a baby!".
6. A project of personal concern to someone; "this project is his baby".

Of course a doctor will tell you "there's your baby"...he or she does not know if you know the correct medical term, so she uses an informal description. In the same way i would tell my father that "his computer is broken" instead of giving him some term he wouldn't understand.

Ah, yes, btw: Even if a fetus is still a fetus at 16 or 20 weeks, as by that time it has developed a nervous system i am *also* against an abortion at that time (after the first trimester) unless there are real medical reasons to do so.

because the mother presumeably does not want to die, nor do her friends and family wish her dead.

This is not true for an unaware foetus
