Why not just live a sinful life then ask forgiveness?

That is a scary thought. You do not know when your end will come and the deeper of a hole you dig in sin the harder it is to climb out. Yes God can pull you out instantly but that is rarely the case. Usually it is a process that you have to go through.
The thing is that the wages of sin is death. Living a life of sin is not the way to be happy. You say it as though you think you will get something more out of sinning through life and at the last minute ask for forgiveness. Sin only brings you down. Any temorary pleasures of any sin can not compare to the happyness and true joy that comes from listening and obeying God. I for one should listen to my own advice because I still lie and do things that are not pleasing to God. I strive to do so and I pray that you will too.

We don't become a Christian simply by asking for the forgiveness of our sins. The verbal asking for forgiveness is a small part of a larger image of repentance and calling Jesus as Lord. Repentence suggests an active turning away from sin, not simply feeling sorry for it and verbally requesting forgiveness. Calling Jesus Lord is an acknowledgement of our sinfulness and submitting ours lives to what he wants.

That doesn't mean Christians never sin or want to sin because we do. God is graceous when we approach him with a repentant heart asking for forgiveness and submitting once again to his Lordship to experience the freedom and transformation that his gift provides.

Why live a life of sin, without knowing a God that Loves you, to satisfy yourself? Surely that would be the right question? You'd be walking a very fine line, what happens if you get hit by a bus in a couple of minutes time, and live for the rest of eternity without God, in incredible pain. Is it worth it for a few minutes of sin, which hurt you anyways? From experience, it's certainly not worth it.

If you believe that Jesus is Lord and choose to live apart from Him until later in life, it seems to me that you are turning from Him.
As everyone else stated, why risk it if you know the truth.
I don't personally think any sin is worth the risk of forever living apart form Him.

Lots of good stuff said above.

In addition, God knows the intent of your heart. If your intent is to get away with as much as possible and then slide into heaven on a single prayer, he knows that and you are no closer to salvation.

Becoming a Christian involves dying to sin, and beginning a new life in which we are forgiven and striving to please God and become more like him. Paul said, "Should we continue in sin so that grace may abound? Of course not! How can we who have died to sin live any longer in it?" (Romans 6)

I read all the posts here and it also raised a question in my head, how do we know if we have successfully turned away from sin? Because I sin all the time but I have started asking forgiveness once a day but I don't feel like I'm living the Christian lifestyle that I should. I didn't know where to ask this so I just put it here. I feel like I could be sinning way too much. What should I do?

Hi there!

That's about like playing Russian roulette.... hoping to beat the odds.

The facts is... you never know when you will take your last breath, and if your next breath is your last, then there isn't time for repentance....

I like "Blessed Assurance, Jesus is Mine" rather than "I wonder where the fire fell."

A desire to be forgiven and live a life pleasing to God is the result of His work of making you alive in Him. IOW, you strive to be obedient because He gives you the desire and ability to be obedient.

God bless

Because, if you think like this, then you believe that Jesus is real, have accepted that Jesus is real, and that Salvation only comes though him, and Him alone.

Then you have denied him in your heart and soul in favor of a life of the Flesh, when you knew and do know the Truth, how can you honestly repent from that?

God Bless.

Vigil.

SlimShady: C.S.Lewis talks about character flaws which aren't that big a deal if one is living only 20 or 30 more years, but if one is to exist for all eternity those flaws would be torture to yourself and your relationship with God. He also uses the analogy that God is trying to turn us from tin soldiers into real live beings, but that is the kind of transformation that takes a life time. So our Christian life is not like a light bulb that's either on or off or dim, it's more like finding our way out of a pit...I've heard it said that it's hard sometimes to know how deep a pit you're in until you're almost out...what you thought was the top of the pit may only be the top of a shaft, it may get wider but you may still be nowhere near the surface. And we're not supposed to get out alone...we're supposed to help others get out too.

I fail every single day in many ways. I've been known to pray to God about my judgmentalism while driving, and 2 minutes later (literally, based on speed and distance) I judge some other driver on the road.

Some words of encouragement:

If you think you're the worst Christian you're not, because the worst Christian thinks he or she is the best Christian.

Love yourself...again, C.S.Lewis said that loving others is a very very difficult task, but what I do have going for me is that I DO know how to love one particularly nasty sinner...me...so the skills I use to love that sinner can then be readily applied to all the other sinners that are just like me.

To love yourself it helps to become comfortable with yourself...to become content. That does not mean to be content as in no ambition, no recognition that there is much need for improvement. Rather it means to be content that God has given you, and will give you, everything you need and that you must cooperate with Him, work with Him and not be independent of Him.

I hope this was of some help.

Slim:
Feeling that you are not fully dead to sin is a great step (possibly the best you can make) if you don't admit that you sin you can never even try to escape. God knows that we are not perfect and will never live this life without sin and forgives us, as WeakButHopeful said, you would be on a worse path if you were thinking that you were perfect. Listen to him, he seems as wise as many I have met.

adding to the above two posts. You should accept that you are forgiven if you have recieved Christ as your Lord and savior. From there you should probably ask God to help you turn away from the sin you feel you keep doing too much. It will still be a process most likely but sometimes God instantly frees you of it. Keep running the race.

First off you should recognize that sin is very deceptive. Our flesh has the ability to often seem as if it is in control of us. It is often very subtle and can appeal to us in ways we don't even think to guard against.

My encouragement to you is to remember that you are a child of God, redeemed by His obedience, not your own, and that, in light of the great gift you have been given, you should continue to strive to align yourself with God in all areas of your life. Know that you are not alone. God has given you His Spirit. It is the conviction of His Spirit that will continue to lead you back to obedience. Success in your Christian walk isn't determined by your consistancy in your walk. That is a byproduct of realizing that the Lord has atoned for your sins. "Success" in your Christian walk is in learning that your Father loves you and is working in you to conform you to the image of His Son. He does this in many ways. One of those is to show you how weak you are in your fight against sin. Cleave unto Him and He will strengthen you. Remember, most importantly, that your place in the family of God was purchased for your by Christ and held in Heaven for you by the power of God. He will not lose you. You are His. Praise His name.

God bless

"The time of salvation is now" Samantha... When is:
then ask for forgiveness?
You say live a sinful life... Life is ended in death thus leaving you without forgiveness. Tomorrow is not guarenteed! You may tie your shoes in the morning but the undertaker may be untieng them before the day is over.

In love,

While I agree with the wisdom of the above posts, there are two things that I see which, surprisingly, no one seems to have pointed out (or at least, I missed).

What makes you think a sinful life is to be preferred over a righteous one? In other words, the way the question comes over (at least for me), is to say that a sinful life is to be preferred over a righteous one, and that somehow repentance is an undesirable act, best put off for as long as possible...

I find a life lived (even poorly) for God is far more appealing to me than a life of sin...

Does no one find holiness, mercy, righteousness, goodness and truth appealing any more?

Second... if you don't like the ways of God now ... why would you convert later? Only to avoid punishment, it seems... who here thinks God can be tricked so?
