anything that degrades as a whole is inappropriate so where do jokes fit into this?
Elijah displayed humour on Mt Carmel when he asked whether Baal was on holiday, or on the toilet because Baal wasn't around to answer the false prophets' pleadings to send fire on the altar.

this was a power move to show God is more powerful... not really a joke (if it was I think Elijah was the only one laughing), his focus was shaming not making people laugh. this shaming is not really translated well as a joke, for example, some youth teased Elisha because he was bald... well Elisha didn't think it was too funny... we all know the ending to that one, was Elisha just joking around too?

There are two things to consider here:

The heart of the speaker and the ears of the hearer.

If you consider love and empathy for your neighbor, you would not want to say things that cause offense to her ear. For example, I find jokes that objectify women to be highly-offensive.

And it is "out of the heart" (Matt. 15:19) that such offensive speech arises. The above kind of joke reveals the state of his heart.

I see that you have good intentions for asking the question. You don't want to know the answer in order to justify telling dirty jokes, but so that you can be less offensive towards your brothers and sisters in Christ. I appreciate your sincerity. In Romans 14:15-21, Paul speaks of love towards a brother, as not being a stumbling block to him. Although he is speaking of food in this passage, perhaps it could be applied to jokes also. Perhaps some jokes that are harmless among your close- friends, can become a stumbling block to another brother in Christ. I think Holy Spirit gives us prudence. If you have to think twice about saying a joke, it's probably a sign that you shouldn't say it. Also, remember that Jesus is in the room when two or three brothers gather (Matt. 18:20). You can ask yourself, "Do I feel okay saying this in front of Jesus?"

Righteousness is offensive to some people. No matter what one does they will offend someone and possibly many. My being single and holding on to my virtue/values is offensive enough to be ostracized which is proof of offense.

It's been interesting how much my attention has been pulled to this question as I go about my days. I just watched a movie with my roommate, one that he wanted me to see. I saw a clip of it earlier, and the clip was really funny, so I was up for watching the movie (it was one of the Scary Movies) (yes, there's movies called Scary Movie). But instead of the good-natured humor of the clip, most of the humor in the movie was the sexual, degrading women kind of humor. I actually left part way through it, and my roommate apologized, saying he forgot how crude some of the humor was.

But through that experience, and remembering to thank God for everything, even the things we don't think we should thank Him for, I realized another level of why I don't like sexual humor; watching all this bad sexual humor really fired up my protective instinct, where I wanted to intervene & get the girl away from the nasty activities. And while my Protector instinct is up, I'm not going to be laughing.

May God bless us all, and may we never forget to pray for God's cruder children!
