Eph 5:4 - Neither filthiness, nor foolish talking, nor jesting, which are not convenient: but rather giving of thanks.

This subject was brought up between me and my former "Christian" boss when I did construction framing, and I made reference to this verse. His response was that we are not under law but under grace and lectured me on how there are many legalist churches that teach you cannot have a little fun. The irony in all of that was that he wanted to hire more Christians to work for him to clean the air in the workplace, but I ended up getting scolded and laughed at for all the times I refrained joining their pretty graphic jokes and conversations. :|

Dirty jokes are a mild form of sexual sin. The principle is that if a person is in the habit of telling dirty jokes, then the only thing stopping him of committing rape, incest, fornication, or adultery is the shame of being caught and the negative consequences of the act. If he could get away with it, he would do any of those things. A wrong heart toward sex starts with taking that second look of lust at a woman. A person may get away with minor lustful thoughts and jokes, because others don't see the person's heart. But God sees the heart, and He sees an evil heart of lust where others don't see.

I was sitting in a restaurant one day a number of years ago with a Christian brother. He looked over at a woman sitting at another table and saw that she had her legs apart under her table. He remarked, "I can see right up to her crotch!" I didn't think much about it at the time, but recently after seeing a study on minor sins leading to major ones, I realised that the brother had a heart of lust and that is why he took special notice of the woman with her legs apart and stared at her. A genuine believer with a holy heart might have seen the same thing, but would have looked away and said nothing.

A professing Christian who tells dirty jokes shows a lack of respect for women, and also a lack of respect for the honour of Christ.

Forgive but 98% of the people I know in my life joke about all kinds of horrific things, but that doesn't mean they will do them. Joking about rape and raping someone take two completely different levels of depravity. Many people use dark humor as a coping method for tragedies they have seen or felt in their own lives. I know many people who are suicidally depressed but joke about it all the time. Why? To make the subject less serious for themselves.

I'm not justifying it, I'm just saying it's psychologically proven.

Yes Christians aren't permitted to have fun. Your verse means no joking even to make a point. I find it no small wonder many don't want to be a Christian.
I know you all have probably heard this one: I know God has a sense of humor because I have to look in the mirror everyday.

I hope no one here think I endorse ribald humor. The language and usage I grew up with is what I'd call illegal these days. One dares not talk like an Arkie in Jawja if they value their life. And if I slipped up and said I was from Arkansas, I'd goof up with a you guys statement from my S Calipornia time. Please don't take offense to the way I posted this. It's very intentional and mean no harm or disrespect. People know I'm not a local no matter how close I watch my speech.

The point that I was making was that there is the potential for extending sinful from very minor to very major. Most will not go into major sin, because they fear the consequences or the shame in being caught. There have been many "repentances" and sorrow over sin after the person has been caught in his sin. An elder in a church I once went to was caught in a homosexual encounter in a public toilet. If he had not have been caught, he would have gone on having encounters with random men, still remaining an elder and preaching on the regular basis.

This is because what would have stopped him sinning was the dishonour to the Name of Christ and the grieving of the Holy Spirit. But that was not his primary concern. This made him a two-faced hypocrite, being a "saintly soul" at church among his Christian peers, and being a "devil" during his encounters with men during the hours of darkness.

This is why it is important for us to keep short accounts with God, confessing our sins as they happen, and receiving forgiveness and cleansing, to maintain the honour of the the Name of Jesus and to maintain our fellowship with God.

Genuine believers hate sin, in themselves and others, because of the stain they put on the Name of Jesus, rather than the fear of being caught or the natural consequences of their actions, or how it affects their spiritual state before God. Hypocrites will refrain from sin just to keep out of hell and to get into heaven, rather than wanting to maintain the honour of the Name of Jesus through their lives, and the lives of others.

I'm asking this mostly as a devil's advocate question, because it's pretty well accepted across Christians that dirty jokes are unacceptable, but I rarely hear reasons as to why. Specifically, why are dirty jokes forbidden, but other offensive jokes allowed? I can joke about something blowing up & killing somebody, and that's fine, and I can joke about drug use, or other awful things, but not sex?

I'm interested to see where this goes.

May God bless us all with the proper enjoyment of this quirky world!View attachment 253811 View attachment 253812
It's because Christ gives us a new heart and new spirit. He changes us.

I think we may have to define when a joke becomes dirty. does simply the context of sex or the mention of specific male/female parts make it dirty or is it when it becomes immoral that makes it dirty?

Well, since so many people don't study what they claim to believe, I will quote the famous actor John Wayne. He was asked in an interview about his personal rules for living. One of them was "Don't offend people unintentionally." That puzzled me because in my experience people took offense without regard to my intentions. But then he explained: "I think I have developed good enough taste that I can avoid offending people."

And there is your answer. It's not that sex is dirty, it is that people THINK sex is dirty and you need to be sensitive to such things.

Anything that degrades sex, males or females is inappropriate.

Yes your point was exactly what I was disagreeing with because you are making the claim that they are only not committing greater sin because of the consequences or fear. How about maybe because they just don't want to do it or resist that temptation. Dirty jokes are not a lead up to violent criminal behavior.

I know!

Because they're not funny?

I’ll bite... I think it’s OK to tell jokes about sex provided they’re not graphic. I know some pretty good ones. I don’t think it’s OK to tell sexual jokes that demean men or women, or that make light of sin.

All I can say is after 22 years in the Navy, I know the most filthy disgusting jokes imaginable. I have told them to people, most have no problem with them.

However, there is always one person who is offended by everything, everything bothers them, everything makes them uncomfortable.

I don't tell many jokes anymore, it makes my life easier, and it is sinful.

I guess I just have a thick skin, because nothing really offends me.

can a joke about sex or male/female be funny without it being degrading?

I think it depends on the recipiant, however, I know people who do not like jokes of any type. Most of them are the most miserable people I have ever met.

LOL
So that's what the Navy does to ya, huh?

I'm not a guy, I'm a girl.
I just don't think sex jokes are funny.
What can I say?

We were on a cruise many years ago and met a nice couple there and spent a lot of time with them.
We went to a "show" one evening after dinner (on ship) and this comic started with the jokes...
We looked at each other..got up, and left...all 4 of us, without saying one word.

I just don't know what's funny about SEX!!!
