  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

Since flat window glass is formed on a molten pool up to 1/2 a kilometer long
why would the Bible be wrong in suggesting the earth is flat?

Would the Scriptures be correct in saying your bedroom window is globe shaped?

Do they say that about my bedroom window?

5They will keep you from the adulterous woman,

from the wayward woman with her seductive words.

6At the window of my house

I looked down through the lattice.

7I saw among the simple,

I noticed among the young men,

a youth who had no sense.

First to avoid confusion, how do you define flat?

Did we really need another thread where you play silly word games about what "flat" means?

People were complaining that the scriptures describe the earth as flat.
Those same silly people do not describe their windows as "globe shaped."

If they did, would you consider that accurate?
Because your window is globe shaped.

I would consider that to be inaccurate.

Oxford dictionary : A spherical or rounded object

Even if my window did have a very slight curve (the tolerances are tiny) it wouldn't be a globe would it? I'm bowing* out of this ridiculous thread now.

*A little glass tolerance joke to lighten the mood.

People were complaining that the scriptures describe the earth as flat.

But the bible never explicitly says "the earth is flat". Instead, it provides scenarios (such as going to a mountaintop and seeing every kingdom on earth, or seeing the four corners of the earth, or draping the sky over the earth) which are simply impossible if the earth is spherical. Word games do not help you here. It doesn't matter if the earth is approximately flat; it cannot be more than a half-sphere in order for those passages to work. Assuming you don't consider them mere flowery language, that is.

Thanks. I appreciate your input.

You made a great point that most people in the world
do not have global connections, so they would only
consider local viewpoints to be valid.

You do realize that when I say "my hair is really curly today", I'm not saying that I have a Stooge attached to my scalp, right? Words mean things, and if you can't figure out the difference between "flat" in the context of the universe being flat and "flat" in the context of the Earth being flat, then you need to spend less time regurgitating links and more time reading them.

Nobody said the earth was flat. I said it is described as flat.
Big difference.

The universe is infinite.

The universe is 84 billion light-years wide.

The universe is a bubble, or an onion.

Or a hall of mirrors, shaped like soccer ball.

Or a shape out of Dante’s Divine Comedy.

So why is scripture criticized as being less accurate than science writers?

Are there people who question the credibility of the scriptures using the argument that "since the Bible says the earth is flat, and we know it is not, that undermines the credibility of the Bible".

If so, that is not a very strong objection precisely because there is every reason to believe that the Scriptures are not intended to communicate literal truth, but instead use a range of literary devices to communicate important messages.

To criticize the Bible on this basis is as silly as criticizing someone for saying "the lake is a lot colder today than yesterday": lakes cannot change temperature rapidly - too much thermal inertia. However, the person who made this statement is certainly not intending to communicate literal truth; they are instead speaking phenomenologically - about the lake "feels to them".

Of course, Christians make it easy for people to raise these kind of objections by themselves mistaking metaphor/allegory etc. for literal truth. In short, if you believe the earth is 10,000 years old, you have no right to object to someone attacking the credibility of the Bible based on its claims that the earth is flat.

No. But it would have been correct if it would have said that the earth is a globe.
Even more so when it´s supposed to describe things from a divine perspective.

Per my post above, there is every reason to doubt that the objective of the writers of the Bible was to provide "literal" truth. In short, and given the broad sweep of literary devices we see in the Bible, it is simply not credible to imagine that descriptions of a flat earth - whether explicit or implied - were ever intended to be taken literally.
