So you accept say images of galaxies taken with Hubble? Or maybe the Cosmic microwave background taken by WMAP? Both NASA projects.

Just intrigued what you would trust NASA on.

I feel I should clarify that I don't contest that we have been to the moon. What I argue is that we haven't put a person on the moon.

That said, I neither accept nor deny the rest. I just don't care enough to look into it.

So. Suppose for a moment that we aimed like hubble at the moon and showed you footsteps. Wouldnt that just suggest we sent a robot with two boots?

How do you know the moon is there? It might be some kind of illusion in the atmosphere.

The government doesn't have any business in space exploration. Now, if the government privatized space exploration and gave incentives, such as guaranteed mineral rights, we'd have colonized the moon long ago.

If you really research , you may discover that we really did not go to the moon. That is why we are not going now. I will try and find the web sites on this and post them in the future. Please keep an openmind as most history we have been told, is not the truth. What you see on film is not always the truth, also. Who is like the beast? Who is able to make war with him? The moon trip happened the evidence is overwhelming.

The original moonshot was motivated by the fear of being upstaged by the Commies as previously mentioned. Having won that particular battle and being strapped for cash after Vietnam and the oil crises the USA decided to step back from the space race.

The shuttle never got developed beyond the initial concept and became a bit of a white elephant in the end and probably more expensive that simply improving on the old saturn Vs.

There are a great many reasons for going to the moon and with the discovery of water ice there bases are increasingly feasible. The costs of a moon launch are much lower now than with Apollo and with the advent of a space cargo business may come down further still.

I think the 60s were quite presumptious in many ways regarding what was possible and they the forced the pace. But we are actually better equipped now than ever to go to the moon.

It will require an act of political will though and political reasons. These could include:

1) Ensuring American dominance of future space mining and energy industries which offer potentially unlimited riches.
2) Ensuring American security vis a vis other space powers which may attempt to undermine that security advantage e.g. China and Russia.
3) Providing a useful distraction from deep defence cuts which are probably required over the next decade in order to balance the budget by demonstrating American prowess on the new frontier.
4) As a basic technological stimulus that gives America the edge through óut the 21st century. This could reinforce American leadership and provide the world with a reason to love and respect America as blazing a trail for the rest of us. Is America a city on a hill (a place of vision and aspiration)- or just another Europe happy to grow fat watching TV on the couch?
