• The General Mental Health Forum is now a Read Only Forum. As we had two large areas making it difficult for many to find, we decided to combine the Mental Health & the Recovery sections of the forum into Mental Health & Recovery as a whole. Physical Health still remains as it's own area within the entire Recovery area.

If you are having struggles, need support in a particular area that you aren't finding a specific recovery area forum, you may find the General Struggles forum a great place to post. Any any that is related to emotions, self-esteem, insomnia, anger, relationship dynamics due to mental health and recovery and other issues that don't fit better in another forum would be examples of topics that might go there.

If you have spiritual issues related to a mental health and recovery issue, please use the Recovery Related Spiritual Advice forum. This forum is designed to be like Christian Advice, only for recovery type of issues. Recovery being like a family in many ways, allows us to support one another together. May you be blessed today and each day.

I hope this thread won't be offensive but I have to ask these questions that I always wonder about:

If you really, really, REALLY want to quit, why haven't you quit yet?
What is it about smoking that you REALLY want to keep doing?
Is it that you think quitting smoking is so hard?
But WHAT is hard about it? It seems to me like it would be a logical choice TO quit: Like it should be the easiest thing in the world to want to treat your body right. To break free of the idea that you NEED a cigarette to do "x".

I smoked for only a short time so I am not a master on the subject but for what it's worth, I have never been able to figure out why people who would WANT to stop smoking, continuing doing it?

If you ask me, I think it would be harder to CONTINUE smoking than to quit.

Can anyone answer these questions?

That's why they call it addiction--it overrules your good sense.

Part habit, part substance addiction. I'm convinced its more addictive than heroin. Here is an idea--take something you have done for years on a regular basis---
and stop or change it.

EX: If you take bath @ night-stop it, take a shower in the am. Do this for one month, then swap---if you forget to take a shower in the am--just one day--you lose. It's harder than you think. I dare you to take the challenge. Move your bedtime--remember you must consistently do the deed 30 days not 10 in a row and 1 oh my bad..30 days--.

The habit of smoking was harder than the nicotine substance. I have somehow associated the act of smoking with pleasure in my brain--while I know this is not true, It is still in there. When I started it made me feel all grown up, I guess somehow I still think I am brainier when smoking. Addiction of ANY kind defies reason--it's not an addiction unless its harmful, costly and of no rational benefit and it must be detrimental to you and or others...That's why they call it addiction.

Did you know nicotine is in many ways as hard to stop as heroin? I think it's all about what happens to us physically.Sense of well being, energy, calmness(we over look the stuff that eventually starts like coughing, headaches) and then you STOP. I think to say why don't we just quit is like saying to us-ok lets all feel really sick now but in the end it will be worth it.

Quitting cigs was the hardest and most annoying part of my years thus far.I now am so far away from the addiction I can talk about it and not feel like I'm missing out. There will always be that thought.I need a smoke!
I just say,I need to live. Got a wife and kids and want to be there.

I want to ask you though, are you a friend or relative of a heavy smoker?

When I initally began smoking I was 12 years old. It was with a crowd of older people and I smoked to appear older. I quit shortly after and then took it back up when I was 14. I tried to quit many times since then, cold turkey, patch and gum and none of those worked. You also have to be ready and be determined.

What is the most hard about quitting for me is the headaches that I will get. I get bad headaches anyway and this will add to it. Last time I quit I made it two weeks. This time I hope to make it a lifetime.

I'm sorry to say this but I actually take a shower in the morning (for the day) and evening (after the gym). Also, I don't have a bath in my house...NOR do I have easy access to one (I live in South Korea). When I was in university though, I did that for a whole semester.

I have talked about my book before...
This one:
http://www.theeasywaytostopsmoking.com/

And if I may speak frankly (though I hope not cruelly)
Did you know nicotine is in many ways as hard to stop as heroin?
Quitting smoking is not nearly as hard as smoking heroin since the effect heroin has on the body is MUCH more pronounced and you crash HARD.
I'm speaking physically of course.
The physically addiction of cigarettes last only a few hours. RIght?
So anything after a couple days is ALL mental right?

Not only that but when you keep saying things like "Quitting smoking is as hard as stopping heroine it is INCREDIBLY disempowering for people trying to quit. Telling someone "Man, it is possibly the hardest thing you'll EVER do" puts people into an INCREDIBLY defeatist headspace. Even if you say encouraging things, constantly reminding smokers (and quiters) that stopping is the HARDEST thing to do.

IOW, stop perpetuating the "myth" (and, no offense, but for safety's sake, that is what I call it) that quitting smoking is the same as stopping heroin.

Lastly, if I haven't made people so angry they've stopped reading, I pray to God, please oh please click on the link that I gave and click on the "Get the facts" button and take a couple minutes out of your life.

This book is amazing AND I HAVE SEEN IT WORK WITH about 15/18 people.
PLEASE PEOPLE!!!

It's EASY to find in Chapters (when I got it, the cashier, AND two shelvers said that they AND one of their friends ALL had success with it!!) OR...
http://www.amazon.co.uk/exec/obidos/ASIN/0140277633

I do and say things like this because I have seen this book WORK MIRACLES! And because I care about the well being of smokers.

Please people, do me this one favour: READ the book

(may even be in the library...)
