  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

In my church, we fast whenever we need great spiritual guidance. I heard of a story where a mother called a local church leader to give her so a blessing who was in the hospital due to an accident. He consented, but didn't show up until 24 hours later. When the irate mother asked him why he didn't show up when she called, he said that he was fasting, and that would increase the power of the blessing.

We also fast for two meals on the first sunday of the month, and give the money that we would have used for those two meals to the church to give to those who need it.

When fasting, it is not just going without food. It is also constant prayer and pondering of the word of God. The point is also not to fast until you pass out. You should fast what ou can. If you can only go tweleve hours without food, just go that long. What truly matters is your dedication to the word of God, and your sacrifice.

God Bless

Baptists? Fast? But . . . but . . . what would we do with all the fried chicken? Sorry, couldn't resist. My old church was a big believer in the buffet as evangelistic tool. ;)

Fasting, in my experience, is overlooked by many Christians. More by Protestants and other non-Catholics than any other group, admittedly. For that matter, so are extended periods of prayer, meditation and reflection. Many churches don't teach about it, and that's a pity.
