  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

Why do Christians hate the world?

Christians don't hate the world they just know that it's not as good as heaven.

Not by a long shot.

After 7 years floating around CF I'm left with the impression that some Christians here are actively hoping to be persecuted as a fulfilment of some vague Biblical prophesy. As a result they are happily discovering persecution under every bush.

Christians need to understand that what they call 'persecution' the rest of us call 'disagreement'.

I accept that in some third world countries religious minorities, including Christians, may be under threat - but Christian persecution in Western democracies is just wishful thinking.

The main reason I prefer not to raise any of my potential future children under Christianity. The faith puts a lot of importance on persecution and suffering, and that can really warp some people's thinking. All the Sunday schools I attended as a kid put a lot of emphasis on persecution to a young audience that was just starting to develop a sense of the world. That to die a brutal death for Christ was a glorious thing. I grew up under protestant Christianity, I cannot imagine what Catholic schools are like.

It really upsets me when I see Christians talking like this, or any other group for that matter. The cry of persecution is a seductive, yet often very destructive mindset. Sadly I'll probably deal with the psychological scars for the rest of my life.

A fairly large block of my fellow Christians have what could be called an entitlement mentality. For a great many centuries we Christians have had things our own way and have controlled society to such an extent that we have been able to impose our own agenda without challenge. However, when minority groups started demanding and receiving rights that they had previously been denied, rights that Christians held all along, these same Christians felt threatened and some even claimed that they were being persecuted. Rights and freedoms are not part of a zero-sum game. Expanding them does not thereby reduce them for some other group. For example, extending marriage rights to homosexuals has not reduced the rights of heterosexuals in the slightest way. In reality Christians have lost no rights and are not threatened in any meaningful way. In Canada and the USA Christians are certainly not being persecuted.

If Heaven is such a fantastic place, why aren't Christians queueing up to buy one-way tickets? :)

Given half a chance, religious folks of all kinds, have the unfortunate habit of picking on minorities from other religions. Religion and fanaticism go hand in glove.

Is that the Luther that wanted to kill all the Jews?

Yeah, thanks Luther. Irony that one of the greatest hater of Jews is being used in a thread about hatred against Christians duly noted, with thanks.

  • "First, to set fire to their synagogues or schools … This is to be done in honor of our Lord and of Christendom, so that God might see that we are Christians …"
  • "Second, I advise that their houses also be razed and destroyed."
  • "Third, I advise that all their prayer books and Talmudic writings, in which such idolatry, lies, cursing, and blasphemy are taught, be taken from them."
  • "Fourth, I advise that their rabbis be forbidden to teach henceforth on pain of loss of life and limb …"
  • "Fifth, I advise that safe-conduct on the highways be abolished completely for the Jews. For they have no business in the countryside …"
  • "Sixth, I advise that usury be prohibited to them, and that all cash and treasure of silver and gold be taken from them …"
  • "Seventh, I recommend putting a flail, an ax, a hoe, a spade, a distaff, or a spindle into the hands of young, strong Jews and Jewesses and letting them earn their bread in the sweat of their brow … But if we are afraid that they might harm us or our wives, children, servants, cattle, etc., … then let us emulate the common sense of other nations such as France, Spain, Bohemia, etc., … then eject them forever from the country …"

Do you have a source for those quotations?

He only calls for the death of rabbis that open their big mouths and teach. Burning their synagogues, schools, houses, books and writings, removing their rights to travel, taking their wealth, putting them on chain gang work details and then expelling them is nowhere near like calling for killing them.

Didn't someone try to do something with these suggestions?

I don't need to watch a 42 min. video to know the answer to the OP's question. George Carlin put it best:

"Religion is like a pair of shoes...Find one that fits for you, but don't make me wear your shoes."

Really? Persecution will spread into the western democracies, maybe not in our life-time .... but eventually it will, the prophesies are sure.

Christians are 'most persecuted group'

1 Corinthians 2

The person without the Spirit does not accept the things that come from the Spirit of God but considers them foolishness, and cannot understand them because they are discerned only through the Spirit.

Jesus said: "Just remember, when the unbelieving world hates you, they first hated me. 19 If you were to give your allegiance to the world, they would love and welcome you as one of their own. But because you won’t align yourself with the values of this world, they will hate you. I have chosen you and taken you out of the world to be mine. 20 So remember what I taught you, that a servant isn’t superior to his master. And since they persecuted me, they will also persecute you. And if they obey my teachings, they will also obey yours. 21 They will treat you this way because you are mine, and they don’t know the One who sent me." John 15
