Why does music stir the soul?

Was there ever a time when listening to music, be it Christian music or not, that you felt so in tune to what was being played that you felt your soul being stirred within your chest? Maybe I'm mistaken, but perhaps its the heart pouring forth sheer pleasure, either way I wanted to know if people feel as though this is in fact, as stated, the soul and perhaps even the spirit moving within us? What's your opinion on that deep inner feeling we get while immersing ourselves in a more than pleasurable tune?

Let me give you a small sample. I was listening to background music (yes, dorky, I know) of a song that was neither Christian nor non-Christian when I got this feeling as described above. The reason I thought to ask people on a Christian forum is because I feel as though the soul is so completely related to God is more ways than we know.

Note: By no means is this my first time feeling this way; this is an innate feeling we have from our childhood, onward.

Great topic. Oh, yes, I believe that's the reason why we sing, listen to music, etc. Also, this is the same reason we have to notice what music we're listening to, singing, etc. In numerous Scriptures such as Psa 33, we're told to sing a new song. To me with limited musical ability, it means taking basic lyrics and changing them just a touch. Or have you ever sung a song and the lyrics just express your heart to Yahweh? What does singing a new song mean to you?

Hello, thank you for the response. I'm not really a singer, just a listener, and unfortunately, I'm not really into Christian music, but don't get me wrong, I am a Christian, but just never been into the music. :p

So what you're saying is, you feel your soul stir, and feel this is another reason we have to be careful to what we listen to (example: a lot of non-Christian music). :D

Oh I'm not a singer either. But a couple of Scriptures say make a joyful noise - so I've got the noise part covered! hehehe Yes, because of the impact music has on us, it's vital that we pay attention to what we're listening to. One example from Scripture is King Saul would get David to play a harp and he would become calm.

Trying to think of some religious music you might like. What about religious Christmas songs? Just asking.

Welcome to the forums, too.
