I have been asking the Lord to take a thought away but it stays in my mind and I can't stop thinking about it?

If it's sinful He told us to cast them down ourselves. If it's not inherently sinful then why do you not want to think about it?

It is not sinful it seams to me that I want something totally different then the thought in my mind.

It is possible for you to receive a message from God through dreams. However, it will do you no good, if you don't spend time in prayer and studying His word, in the Bible. The more time you spend praying, studying his word, the better your relationship with God will grow. Remember, because of Jesus' sacrifice and resurrection, we now have an opportunity to have a real relationship with our living God. One of the best things I found for myself, is to question anything, that reveals God's love, not only for me, but the love he has for the entire world. The very love, Jesus, gave up his free will for, to conquer death for our own sins.

I do believe that God speaks to us through our dreams and you can pray for discernment so that you know when it's from God and when it's just your mind processing things.
As far as the Lord taking thoughts away, then that would not be allowing us to be our honest selves. What we can do is choose not to be over come by thoughts or temptations, or whatever the situation may be. The Bible tells us to take every thought captive to make it obedient to Christ, 2 Corinthians 10:5.
If we have unwanted thoughts, it is an opportunity to learn and grow and become more mature in our faith and who we are as a person. Just be honest with God about the thoughts and ask for His help with it.
