Why does G-d allow hunger and homelessness in spite of Mt 6:25-34?

For the same reason that we aren't supposed to feed the deer at the camp ground. They will loose the ability to forage for food on their own. If God intervenes in every hardship of life then it wouldn't be life, we wouldn't be free will beings. We would just be potted plants on a shelf somewhere.

We have a son sleeping in a motor home in the driveway.
He came in the other day and dropped food on the floor
then put it back in the fridge except for what spilled
on the floor. That's why he lives in the driveway.

If he moves out I may offer it to a homeless guy

With respect, you neglected half of the OP's question. Your answer might be reasonable for why people starve (though I don't find it so), but the OP is pondering why people starve in spite of Mt 6:25-34. Care to address that?

In some cases, able-bodied people are too lazy to get a job and feed themselves. What money they do have they spend on alcohol and drugs.

Yes, some of Jesus' instruction was specifically for the apostolic teaching core during the 3 years of his public teaching wherin he had asked the 12 to drop everything and "follow me".

*Many of Jesus' apparently hard sayings were more of a personal confession of faith and a pledge of devotion than commands to his followers.

Besides, Jesus & company went fishing a lot.

The root cause is because sin came into the world. It wasn't the fault of God, it was man who sinned of his own free will knowing that this sin would bring forth death.

Adam and Eve sold us out. But not a single one of us would have done differently. It proves the heart of man given free will is and has been wicked from the very beginning.

This is the very reason mankind needs a Saviour to convert his corrupt will to the perfect will of God.

Matthew 24:9-22 and John 15:20 seem to tell me that the answer is yes.
