Why does Christianity have denominations?

The Church is One. People choose not to join it. Jesus' prayer was answered, always has been, always will be.

We are all fallible human beings that is why. Even with that in Major Theology traditional Christians are united --- who Jesus is, what he did, etc., In minor theology charity --- second coming beliefs, spiritual gifts, denominational differences.

2 Corinthians 4:1-4

4 Therefore seeing we have this ministry, as we have received mercy, we faint not;

2 But have renounced the hidden things of dishonesty, not walking in craftiness, nor handling the word of God deceitfully; but by manifestation of the truth commending ourselves to every man's conscience in the sight of God.

3 But if our gospel be hid, it is hid to them that are lost:

4 In whom the god of this world hath blinded the minds of them which believe not, lest the light of the glorious gospel of Christ, who is the image of God, should shine unto them.

Acts 15 which contains the first council explains how the apostles discussed and decided which laws that Gentile converts should follow.

Christianity has denominations because people like to believe that what they think is the truth (with the assumption that everyone else is mistaken).

Paul addressed this issue when he wrote to the church at Corinth...

1 Corinthians 1:10-17, " I appeal to you, brothers and sisters, in the name of our Lord Jesus Christ, that all of you agree with one another in what you say and that there be no divisions among you, but that you be perfectly united in mind and thought. My brothers and sisters, some from Chloe’s household have informed me that there are quarrels among you. What I mean is this: One of you says, “I follow Paul”; another, “I follow Apollos”; another, “I follow Cephas”; still another, “I follow Christ.” [denominations]

Is Christ divided? Was Paul crucified for you? Were you baptized in the name of Paul? I thank God that I did not baptize any of you except Crispus and Gaius, so no one can say that you were baptized in my name. (Yes, I also baptized the household of Stephanas; beyond that, I don’t remember if I baptized anyone else.) For Christ did not send me to baptize, but to preach the gospel—not with wisdom and eloquence, lest the cross of Christ be emptied of its power."

"Enter ye in at the strait gate: for wide is the gate, and broad is the way, that leadeth to destruction, and many there be which go in thereat:" - Matthew 7:13

So you're saying that when Jesus was speaking to His disciples on "the mount", He was referring to the various Christian denominational differences? That is some stretch!

What about the Holy Spirit? I think He should decide.

That sounds very good on paper, but what does that actually mean?

In the 2nd century a man by the name of Montanus, and his two female companions Prisca and Maximilla claimed that a new spiritual era had been initiated, and that their work was a new work of the Holy Spirit. Montanus claimed to be a prophet, speaking in the very person of the Holy Spirit. Their movement became known as Montanism, and they attracted a number of followers, they even attracted Tertullian of Carthage to their sect.

They claimed to speak on behalf of the Spirit, were they right or wrong? Was the Holy Spirit deciding through them? The historic position of the Church, since the time of Montanus himself, is that he was a heretic and a false prophet, and that the practices of the Montanists were contrary to the teachings of Christ and the Apostles. However, the Montanists maintained that their work superseded the work of the Apostles, even as Christ and the Apostles had superseded the Old Covenant.

Should we reject Montanism?
Or should we embrace Montanism?
