Why Do We Hate Each Other So Much? (5 Reasons Anger Is the New Epidemic)

This is a short, well-written article on our modern culture of anger. It can be a challenge to restrain such anger when the site gives a few full-screen pop-ups, but I believe the article is worth the annoyances. It was interesting how he tied anger on social media & websites like this one with road rage, seeing the separation between people as the same factor as each.

What are your thoughts on the article? It seems very relevant for our age.

With the internet I agree with much of the article ... it's a platform that makes it much easier to promote hatred ... but it in itself is not the problem ... the problem is the same as it has always been and always will be until our Lord returns.

Jeremiah 17:9
King James Bible
The heart is deceitful above all things, and desperately wicked: who can know it?

Mankind suffers from severe heart trouble.

Hate has no place in the heart of a Christian.

What about hating evil?

Psalm 11:5 "The Lord examines the righteous, but the wicked, those who love violence, he hates with a passion."

hat are your thoughts on the article?

I agree it kind of reminds me of the type of articles I read back in college as far as psychology goes.

I think things are deeper than social/ environmental forces. Their is some real ideology stuff going on, especially with politics. I'm talking about things like projection, and treating people with a different viewpoint as not being human etc.

But even beyond that there probably is a lot of demonic activity going around. A week or two ago, I posted a thread on the Catholic Forum by where an excorcist was talking about politics briefly, in much longer sermon that last an hour or so.

Pavel,

Check out The Velvet Rope Economy. It unpacks the caste system put in place well before the Internet. You’ll see traces of behavioral economics and conditioning. By the end you will understand why everyone’s exploding. They’ve stoked the wound so much it was bound to blow. You’ll definitely see the demonic influences throughout.

You should be able to find the book in the library. :)

Yours in His Service,

~Bella

I have heard it said that the internet is even more widely used in Canada than the USA and yet the COVID-19 has drawn Canadians together in the face of a common enemy but it seems quite the opposite in the USA. Even though we share a great deal in common our histories have shaped our national psyches. When push comes to shove Canadians act together whereas Americans remain fiercely independent to the point of insanity.

Interesting. I see he said he was an 8 on a test, I took it and found I was a four.

One of the tensions we experience is the widening chasm between religious and secular expectations for culture, public policy, and epistemology. Religiously conservative people struggle to understand why the secular section of the population arrives at the conclusions we do. Secularists struggle to have patience with views we think of as outdated and lacking in empathy. Religious people call secular people evil and secular people call religious people stupid or immoral.

A couple generations ago when the culture was more religiously homogenous, there was less tension. However, now that the country is more secular, the contrast between these two perspectives is becoming stark and leading to increased tension. Take a look at Secular Western Democracies where the homogeneity is non-religious--they are experiencing relative peace and little cultural upheaval. We are in a transitionary period and it is painful and leads to expressions of frustration and often hatred.

The article seems to not fully grasp the degree of vitriol coming from the religious side of the isle; the author states, "I wish I could say Christians were exempt from this trend. We’re not. In fact, there are a good number of Christians who are fueling it." He acknowledges his Sid has a "good number" of these people, but pulls back on stating they are as likely as some others to be hateful. This is a human problem and Christians are no less hateful. In fact, people are most hateful when loosing power. It really cuts both ways. There are awful people on the secular left and on the religious right. Most however, are watching the dumpster fire from somewhere close to the middle.

I agree with much of what you've said here, Caliban. These are good comments. The only caveat is that I think people should be a bit more critical of the difference between anger (of various levels and kinds) and hate since they're not synonymous.

Lot of hate yes, but I don’t hate anybody. Hate comes mostly because people are proud, afraid, envious/jealous, greedy etc. That kind of things will lead to hate sooner or later. It’s impossible to hate and love someone at the same time. So hate is basically lack of love. As christians we need to have compassion and empathy towards haters. But at the same time we need to protect our own wellbeing so we can serve God effectively. If we don’t feel well, we can’t help others.

Things we can hate ....

Proverbs 6:16-19

There are six things that the Lord hates, seven that are an abomination to him: haughty eyes, a lying tongue, and hands that shed innocent blood, a heart that devises wicked plans, feet that make haste to run to evil, a false witness who breathes out lies, and one who sows discord among brothers.

1 Corinthians 15:33
Do not be deceived: “Bad company ruins good morals.”

Proverbs 8:13
The fear of the Lord is hatred of evil. Pride and arrogance and the way of evil and perverted speech I hate.

We hate all evil .... and we know where it comes from.

An enemy has done this.

Some are so given over to evil they will never change and no we should not hang out with them ... we look for a glimmer in people and try to lead them to Christ in hope the glimmer will come into full light.

I think similar to how sometimes teenagers are cruel because they don't understand their bullying may stick with someone for the rest of their life, people justify being rude online as "it's just the internet so it won't matter." Society is also very fractured in many countries and it creates unhappiness that people take out on each other.

He's right that demonic spirits are involved. He is wrong, however, in his implication that demons are on one ideological side (and presumably the angels are on the other side).

Demons don't give a whit about man's ideology. Demons are here to sow confusion because Satan moves most easily under the cover of confusion. Even a purely evil government like that of North Korea cannot stop the Church (which is why Paul could write Romans 13 under the reign of Emperor Nero). But confusion can stop the Church.

Demons play both sides of the aisle in order to sow confusion.

Agreed! Technology reveals what is already there to be seen.

One issue I think can be seen in real-life and on the internet is a lack of empathy, also a lack of patience which stems from it. From road rage, to internet abuse, to political polarization, to lawlessness. A lack of ability to see anything from anyone else's perspective and an unrealistic desire for quick solutions and jargon to fix complicated problems.

A solution? As Christians we can be kind, respectful, patient. Set a different example. God Bless :)

For my part, I don't hate anyone and have no reason to do so. But with that said, I do get angry with people who think I look like their next target for ideological punching practice ... and that is something I don't take lying down.
