What does this have to do with the erroneous claim that Masonry is a religion? From 1925 to 1984, the Grand Lodge of Utah prohibited members of the LDS Church from joining, but no other Grand Lodge followed this ban and Latter-day Saints were free to join Lodges outside Utah. In 1984, the Grand Lodge of Utah officially dropped its anti-Mormon position and allowed LDS Church members to join. Today there is no formal obstacle in Utah or in any other Grand Lodge preventing Latter-day Saints from becoming Freemasons. Since 1984 several of the Grand Masters of the Grand Lodge of Utah have been Latter-day Saints.
I think the point is that masonary is not a religion, but that it's rituals were incorporated into a religion. What does this have to do with the erroneous claim that Masonry is a religion?
Sure. I think I've made that point myself several times on CF.I think the point is that masonary is not a religion, but that it's rituals were incorporated into a religion..
Yes. I think we see it the same way.Sure. I think I've made that point myself several times on CF.
Smith knew a little of Masonic symbols, rituals, etc. and helped himself to them when he started his religion. That isn't especially shocking or tell-tale. He did not do this with the permission of any Grand Lodge nor does him creating a new religion mean that Masonry itself is a religion (which we both seem to have agreed it is not).
What and whom are you talking about here?
Lindsay certainly chose his words carefully in that article. What he's saying is that the Mormon ceremony in total is not derived from Masonic ritual, but that "elements" of it may have been taken from it.LDS apologist Jeff Lindsay actually made contact with someone who is both LDS *and* a Mason for their input -

Mormonism claims to be the restoration of the early church and yet the early church did not build temples.
Also, the NT refers to the body of Christ as the Temple.
So why do Mormons believe we need Temples?
