A little while ago I asked God into my life.

I was feeling very uncomfortable with myself. I spent all my time trying to please other people and prove myself to everyone (my husband, my mum, my friends etc). I would often lie to tell people what they wanted to hear and try to be the person they expected or wanted me to be, and in the process.... I lost myself. I am very shy and obviously have had no self confidence, I now have no idea who I really am.

I have asked God to show me the way into the light. I have made a vow to myself and god to always tell the truth and change my ways, but I am finding it very difficult.

How do I break down my defense walls to let god shine in my life. I am finding it very difficult and in the process feel like I am failing both myself and god.

We in Alcoholics Anonymous have a slogan, "Let Go; Let God." You're probably trying to accomplish by your own will power things and behaviors that can only come as a gift of the Holy Spirit.
Relax, if you are new to the faith, you're exactly where you should be. God wants you to know that you cannot save yourself from sin. It's never been done. Not by the Apostles, not by the saints, not by the preachers. Let God work His will through you. And pray.

First of all, be yourself. Don't try to be who they expect you to be.
People in general want everyone around us to "be like us", think like us, do things like us. Why? Because we are stuck on US.
As a christian, it's not about us, it's about God the Father, Son and Holy Spirit. What really matters is how GOD sees you. And from His own words; "YOU ARE THE RIGHTEOUSNESS [OF GOD] IN CHRIST".
In HIS eyes, you are already righteous, because you have been bought and paid for. Jesus' work on the cross was the payment. When God sees you, He sees Jesus.
Who cares how everyone else sees you.
Start looking at yourself like God sees you. To do this, you have to read His word. Dig into it like it's a thick juicy steak. And enjoy !!!

Remember when we ask God into our heart - we are a new creation - all old things have been put to rest.

The only way you can do it - is just 'do it' - start walking with confidence, let people see that Jesus' light shines through you. Be yourself.

I can relate to you as I did the same thing - always trying to please everyone and I spent most of my life doing this. But now the only person I really want to do right for is Jesus. Just be honest and know that Jesus is with you and smiling down on you because He can see your heart and knows that you want to do right in the sight of Jesus.

The real you will start shining through very quickly if you just put your eyes upon Jesus.

When I am having a problem, I go to the Word of God and read until I'm filled. I might start in Psalms and Proverbs, and eventually get to the New Testament and Old Testament. I pray as I read, I ask God for help, I pray verses out loud, I talk to Him.

God is love and light and truth. If you get close to Him, that love, light and truth starts filling you on the inside. You find yourself falling in love with Him, Mark 12:30. It is easy to be obedient then, because you are doing it out of love. You may fail sometimes, but He will pick you up. He is your comforter, your solace, your shelter in a storm, your strong tower, Ps. 18:1-3.

It is easy then to take down your defenses, because you are so close to Him.

Dear Sparklette - It sounds to me that you are busying comparing yourself with other people because you think that is how you SHOULD be. You might read that sentence again to get the full meanings involved.

Because you are making a list, figuratively speaking, of how you stark up against others you are focusing on others - not yourself. No wonder you don't know who you are - you 'are' everybody else but YOU.

God will take you out of that mental environment and allow you to become YOU - and so precious you are! You have embarked on a journey. It will, at times prove difficult - as all such journey tend to be. But God can only use genuine vessels - not cheap imitations. Are your ready for that journey?

God knows exactly every way you're going to fail Him, every single time. Even when you don't know.

And He died to save you. He likes you -- loves you -- that much. Find out who that "you" is He loves so much. Trying to please everyone just obscures that "you" He loves.

He loves you. Not what you can do for Him, how you can change for Him, how you can be for Him.

He loves you.

Hi Sparklette,

A little while ago I asked God into my life.

I was feeling very uncomfortable with myself. I spent all my time trying to please other people and prove myself to everyone (my husband, my mum, my friends etc).

You don’t have to prove anything, pull back and just be who our Lord Jesus Christ wants you to be.

I would often lie to tell people what they wanted to hear and try to be the person they expected or wanted me to be, and in the process.... I lost myself.
Is this is the act of being under “peer pressure”.

Just take it all to our Lord Jesus Christ, and confess and repent those weaknesses and forgive any who put you in this position and forgive yourself.

I am very shy and obviously have had no self confidence, I now have no idea who I really am.
When we all take that first step with our Lord Jesus Christ we all felt much the same way.

I have asked God to show me the way into the light. I have made a vow to myself and god to always tell the truth and change my ways, but I am finding it very difficult.
We all do that, and we fail HIM miserably. But, if we pick ourselves up and confess and repent our shortcomings and sins, then HE will lift us up in HIS forgiveness and grace.

How do I break down my defense walls to let god shine in my life. I am finding it very difficult and in the process feel like I am failing both myself and god.
See if you can get a copy of “SET FREE” by Neil Anderson. There are two other books worth reading as well: “Victory Over Darkness” and “The Bondage Breakers”.

Blessings!:)

Have faith in yourself that you will allow God to show you the way.

Have faith in God that he will show you the way.

These things take time. You cannot develop a rock strong faith overnight, nor can you grasp your religion in a day.

Loving God is a constant growing experience. It is full of twists and turns, hiccups, let downs and uphill battles.

You will find your way I promise :D

What God put in you is awesome and great! You first must be you or find you - the you that is in God. Be yourself. Nothing works until you be yourself. Happiness is something within - nobody can make anybody truly happy but, the Lord. It sounds like an distraction for you to keep your mind worried about things that won't impact or effect you in the long run. You are wonderfully made by the Lord and when you be the person the Lord made then you find peace and will always have it. Don't put people first put God first. Don't tell people what you think they want to hear. If your concern is hurting their feelings or disappointing them then just don't say anything at all until you find a way to cushion the truth. Stay Blessed! Being yourself will take you to higher levels in the Lord! I am a witness!!!

I don't understand it, but struggle builds faith.

You are not failing, you are growing spiritually. Soon you will be able to look back and see that you have been changed. God is making you a faithful courageous follower of Jesus. Why would He not?

In time you will learn to embrace the struggle as it keeps us close to God.
