Ok then, this is a question I really want answered. You see, when somebody in one of my classes over heard that I was not a Christian, they went ballistic and started yelling.
Some Christians are so insecure in their faith that they find it very difficult to exist in the same space as disbelief, in case they catch it.
However, they cannot admit this, so they will tell you that they are so concerned for your immortal soul that they end up shouting at you. This is not what Christ taught us to do, so you can disregard this excuse. It is not just Christians that behave like this; any shouting zealots of any faith are those most insecure in what they believe.
Anyone who is secure in their faith will not be threatened by any belief of yours, or anyone else's.

I tried to end the argument multiple times, and then eventually some other people came over and picked on me. I ended up in a corner with 2 people who were one of the few people that weren't practically at me.
That anecdote does have a point: why do you guys care if somebody is non-christian? That is one thing I respect about fellow Agnostics, Atheists, most Buddhists, and some others. When they learn that somebody is not an Agnostic, Atheist, Buddhist, ext. They don't feel sorry for you or attempt to attack your faith, the people I've met just shrug it off. What makes Christianity so different from that? Why can't I have my religion and you have yours?
Well, let me ask you a question. Do you think that at your age, ANY difference would cause this reaction? Maybe, your classmates are not as mature as you and it is not simply a case of Christianity vs Non-Christian.
Lisa
Hmm... you know, I actually did consider that point. However there is still the fact that people who seem plenty mature and are older than my classmates act similar. The quote by a former president of the United States above is another example of Atheists being descriminated against.
Why can't I have my religion and you have yours?
I would be able to believe this if Christians who are quite firm (Like George H. W.) treated Atheists with more respect than they seem to. Thank you for the answer though.
Can someone please give me a source for that quote? How do I know that it is real unless I see the source?
Lisa
Well, having some knowledge of George II would do the trick. With the caveat that just because the words state a particular thing very clearly, does not necessarily mean that he intended that meaning when he said them.

I cannot answer for their behavior except to say that it was wrong, and that is not what Christ teaches. Please accept my apology on behalf of all Christians.

We care because Christ gave us a job. That job is to bring the gospel of salvation to every unbeliever. We are required by The Great Commission to spread the word.
Unfortunately, in this case those who "attacked you" didn't do it with sensitivity and understanding.
Further, we care because we do not wish that anyone should spend eternity anywhere but in heaven. The alternative is too horrible to even describe adequately.

Perhaps they don't care because they do not the truth about eternity. Further, if they knew that truth they don't care enough about you to try to help you.
