Why do atheists seem to obsess over something they don't believe in?

Yes, God finds your behavior insulting.

How interesting that God just happens to be offended by the same things that you personally are. That must be convenient.

eudaimonia,

Mark
I admit I did an error there, I was limiting God to my own feelings and sentiments, and everybody who limits God fails at apophatic and lived theology like our Church teaches, so I should have said in my opinion God feels insulted about it. My bad.

To err is human. But to deify one's own opinion is... also human.
I don't think you know how much this message you just posted impacted me now, it solved a lot of doubts I had. Totally unexpected, I guess it's not bad having atheists here after all...

I honestly hope that it impacted you in some positive way (I cannot tell from your message). It was meant as tongue-in-cheek, not as an insult.

I understand that you're just making an analogy...and I couldn't agree more.

Imagine if someone had the audacity to come to your house (say every other Saturday for example) and tried to convince you that they know the "truth" and you don't. Imagine if they tried to say that you should believe as they do...and even threatened you with eternal torture!

That would be fairly egregious in my eyes.

Yes, it really was, it really helped me grow in my faith and it shreded some light over some theological issues.

Exactly, it's not human at all and not to say it's not christian at all, and it has to be stopped.

The best way to speak with atheist, agnostics and humanist, is to not assume they have an agenda, but rather ask them honest questions and really get down to the bottom of their reasoning, then give them sound reasons that make sense for why you believe in God. Let them make their own assumptions from there, but try not to assume anything about them. Ultimately the truth will speak for itself, no assumptions needed.

God bless!

That is the same way I approach a theist. I ask simple straight forward questions and I have yet to hear a rational and or logical reason to believe in a God. All the reasons are completely faith based (which is cool) but not everyone has the same psychological need for faith beliefs.

That's great I'm glad you do that, but we can't both be right, which is why the truth will speak for itself. I predict you'll start to come across more and more Christians who seem really reasonable up until they explain why they believe in God then you will determine they are unreasonable when in fact it's you who is being unreasonable without realizing it. Again the truth will speak for itself, truth does not rely on me or you to be true.

I think it is perfectly reasonable for a christian to say they believe in a God based on faith and I have no issues with that and will never question it.

I only challenge them, when the following occurs and it happens quite often on this site:

-The christian claims they are morally superior to me
-The christian claims I can have no meaning to my life without believing in God
-The christian claims to have objective evidence to support their belief in a God
-The christian claims I have not looked hard enough for God and I am being led by evil
-The christian intentionally misrepresents well evidenced reality, in order to protect their belief

If they can stay away from the above, it is perfectly reasonable to have a faith belief in a God and it may be the best thing for that particular person, if it helps them live a better life.

Well how about a deal then? When christians stop coming to my house (my actual home, not some metaphorical "house of god") trying to spread their nonsense...I'll gladly stop posting on a man-made website that allows for discussion between people of differing views/opinions.

Sound good to you?

I really like your attitude towards this topic Chriliman. I think the world would be a better place if more people adopted that mindset.

Let the truth speak for itself.

There wouldn't be any need for the kind of public proselytizing that I frankly find disgusting. It's not as if you see atheists at college campuses ranting and raving about how there isn't a god. It's not like we line up outside abortion clinics screaming at young women facing a difficult choice.

Taken to it's logical extent, if people shared your attitude...they wouldn't even take their children to church. They'd simply not teach them about religion until their old enough to understand and then they'd teach them about multiple religions....let the child decide for himself/herself what to believe. After all, if the truth speaks for itself...all they'll need to do is seek out the truth and they should arrive at the correct conclusion.

Perhaps you know nothing about Orthodoxy, my Church, our history, and our christianity, because we are completely different than you think. Read, learn and study about our theology, our tradition, our history and you will see that all that "nonsense" talked by "christians" coming to your house is nothing to us because our world is completely different.

Obviously you didn't see my response to Eudamonist correcting myself and apologising because you were too busy searching for that picture in order to ridiculize me and to look superior than me by doing it.

Athiest like you are the reason I have hope for atheists. It all comes down to belief in the end. The question is will you continue to believe God does not exist or will you believe what makes the most sense.

So while you have no problem painting all atheists with the same brush...the moment I mention christians coming to my home and suddenly I'm including you amongst them?

Allow me to clarify then...I don't think you or your ilk have ever come to my home. In fact, I'm almost certain of it. However, I don't think that there's going to be some significant difference between the message they promote and the message your particular denomination promotes. Can you at least accept that I'm no more likely to be persuaded by your message than any other christian message?

The point was about intrusion, wasn't it? You feel that the presence of atheists on this website is an affront, an intrusion into a realm reserved for christians. My point was that your point seems a bit childish. The amount of christian intrusion into my life is staggering when compared to the amount of atheist intrusion into your life.

For them to be comparable, you'd have to answer your door twice a week to atheists who just want to share the "truth" with you. You wouldn't be able to drive across town without seeing 4-8 different gathering places for atheists...where the place messages on signs against god and erect massive well-lit symbols to atheism. You wouldn't be able to go to the store, or out in public at all without seeing atheistic symbols around the necks of many many strangers. During every election cycle, you'd have to hear politicians proclaiming their atheism and describing how it directs their opinions and political goals. You'd hear people constantly complain about how the lack of atheism in the classroom is leading to the moral degradation of our nation. You'd have coworkers tell you to your face that christians like yourself are ruining the country, an atheistic country, a country that you don't belong in.

If these were the kinds of intrusions into your life that atheism made...then perhaps I'd consider your opinions about this website more seriously. Since this doesn't even remotely describe the intrusions that you face from atheism...my advice to you would be to suck it up and quit complaining. You don't get everything you want in this life.
