• Starting today August 7th, 2024, in order to post in the Married Couples, Courting Couples, or Singles forums, you will not be allowed to post if you have your Marital status designated as private. Announcements will be made in the respective forums as well but please note that if yours is currently listed as Private, you will need to submit a ticket in the Support Area to have yours changed.

  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.
  • We hope the site problems here are now solved, however, if you still have any issues, please start a ticket in Contact Us

Didn't you want to lurk for a bit before posting any more?

OP: because it's fun and because you learn something new every day.
I did --- but, hey --- I tried.

Bah. I'm a 29° Exalted Templar of the Triangle, there is no member of the Evil Atheist Conspiracy on this forum ranked high enough to question my motives.

~Ahem~
Treasurer here for the past 4 years.
If you don't understand the importance of that position, then perhaps I can file an application to have you demoted to the 25th degree Exalted Templar of the Rectangle position.

Of course, neither one of us wants to see that happen, yes?
The first theistic card carrying member of the EAC was not me, but I was the first theistic card carrying member of the EAC to get a position.
I can question your motives ("me be here longer than yuu!") and I can....ahhh..."divert" your yearly funds as well, and I can also force you to breed your own sacrifices, instead of using our Evil Socialist Agenda to garner kittens from the EAC Socialist State.
Now, we don't want to see that happen, do we?

;)

because you need to.
Or, maybe...
...Just maybe ...
...Some of us find it interesting.
Maybe some of us actually ENJOY reading, investigating and talking about science.
Personally, I find A Brief History of Time, Elements of Ecology, The Whole Shebang, The Elegant Universe and Human Antiquity to be enjoyable reads in the same way that some people read the latest Top 10 novels.
I also enjoy talking about it (with people that agree and disagree with me). My 20+ year long friend and my wife are two real life examples of such.
Not to mention my son.

I could go on to the E&M forum and ask the Christians (and, considering that it's an open forum) "Why discuss religious beliefs? Because you NEED to"
Now, if you can agree to that question and conclusion, then perhaps I can agree to your OP.
IOW, do you NEED to talk about religion (specifically on THIS forum, which is supposed to be dedicated to discussion of the Physical and Life SCIENCES, and not to non-scientific beliefs)?

Hey all! This post was just a duplicate of my other one so I wrote some nonsense in place of the duplication. No need for an emotional reaction to it.;)

I still love science- except for all the theories that conflict with my beliefs which are not essential in my mind to appreciate the amazing things that scientists know about the physical world. When I was a kid I had a collection of all the elements. I sometimes (to show you how immoral I am) stole some from science lab just to have an element I couldn't get. My favorite elements were the noble gases and the halogens. They are so colorful! My least favorite elements other than those were the ones on the top right area of nonmetals. I had an attitude against compounds I always wanted the purest thing. The element I wanted most to have but couldn't was beryllium. I loved the name. I also wanted so bad to have sodium. I was always depressed by the fact that I couldn't have phosphorous. You get the idea. I loved the spectacle of chemical reactions, the amazing things of physics lasers were my favorite toy with magnets a close second. I was kind of shoehorned into biology by the fact my parents are doctors and wanted me to be one but I wasn't so enthusiastic about it until I learned of cellular machinery. My favorite subject in bio was neuroscience. I took many courses on this and absolutely am fascinated by the physics of it. Ironically my love for physics was only excelled by my inability to do math so my attempt to major in it was stultified as quickly as it began though I learned a lot on my own at my own pace. I love science. All that talk about science can take a hike is nonsense. The problem is I see scientists as arrogant in their presumption that they can explain everything. There is nothing that makes me suppose that we know enough about anything with our simple linear thought process to determine metaphysical knowledge logically. What I'm saying is that just because the world is governed by physical processes doesn't mean there can't be a life behind them or even an illusion that they are the real thing when there is something far greater behind them. Plus, there's that little experience I had. I am nuts for God now science is a mere memory but I am loathe to give it all up though I think I probably will because I would much rather study theology with the time I have. So there. I'm not criticizing anybody for discussing science go back to your discussion on the implications of ape sign language capability on human social development or your thoughts on how christians are stupid because they believe in things that science can't prove. As though science is beyond all doubt in everything it says.

What empirical evidence do you have to back up this hypothesis?

I believe in the last "Is Science Fun?" conference that the consensus was that more research needed to be done.

Maybenot... sorry you think that scientists are arrogant and think they can explain everything. I wonder how you got such a mistaken impression.

and the compounds on the periodic table.... uh....never mind.

We had a bunch of junk sodium metal, that is way more fun than just phosphorus!

Throw a big chunk in the water and see what it does.

I tell you I forgot an element that I just thought was the coolest of all Iodine! Heat it just a little and it makes a purple haze. Bromine also has a high place in my heart. Phosphorus and sodium absolutely rock. You don't like the elements? If there is a compound that didn't bug me being impure and such it was hydrogen peroxide. I just loved the pure oxygen gas I could get from putting iron in it. You hate elements? You must be evil. There is nothing cooler than the flame tests. Barium red, sodium orange, copper green you get the idea. Of course it is all physics, which you abhor. I can tell you are in a tension between being nice to me and absolutely being disgusted with me hespera. Is it because I'm a science believer who thinks evolution sucks and the big bang is no more than bluster? Oh yeah, liquid nitrogen, get me some of that!

hey you!
My post is NOT a duplicate of your "other one" (i.e. the very OP you made)
Not even close.

Don't pretend otherwise
(pssst, 'cause that's called lying, and your book tells us what happens to liars, right? :p)

Is your belief YEC (i.e. the earth was created 6000-10000 years ago), OEC (the earth was created an undetermined millions of years ago), a GAP theorist (the earth may have existed kajillions of years ago, but only came into its current form circa 10000 years ago), or other?
Just curious.

And yes, your beliefs (since you brought them up) are now a subject of this thread.

My belief is some undetermined version of YEC. Perhaps around the end of the time of the so-called last ice age.
