...Tigerbunnies confused with Vorpal Bunnies?

Wasn't there a Vorpal Bunny in Monty Python and the Holy Grail?

(50 points to the first person who can tell us where the Vorpal Bunny appeared in Monty Python and the Holy Grail. 100 points to the first person who can tell us why it's a 'vorpal' bunny!)

TIM:
Well, that's no ordinary rabbit!

ARTHUR:
Ohh.

TIM:
That's the most foul, cruel, and bad-tempered rodent you ever set eyes on!

ROBIN:
<edit for the weak of heart>

TIM:
Look, that rabbit's got a vicious streak a mile wide! It's a killer!

TIM:
I'm warning you!

ROBIN:
What's he do, nibble your bum?

TIM:
He's got huge, sharp-- eh-- he can leap about-- look at the bones man!

ARTHUR:
Go on, Bors. Chop his head off!

BORS:
Right! Silly little bleeder. One rabbit stew comin' right up!

TIM:
Look!
[squeak]

BORS:
Aaaugh!

Congrats!! I sent ya the 50 blessings for the first answer. The second answer wasn't quite what I was looking for. I was looking for the reason to be more explicitly stated (and...hint!...it's a Dungeon's & Dragons reference). Oh...why not? I'll send ya 100 blessings, anyway...after I collect my monk's salary tonight. (And then I promote to Commando!! 1500 posts!!)

100 blessings to the first person who can identify the link between Vorpal Bunnies and D&D!!

I'm about to reveal my nerd-status here, but unless I'm mistaken, the term "vorpal" ultimately comes from Lewis Carroll's "Jabberwocky" (which TigerBunny has referenced). In D&D, a vorpal sword is magically enchanted to automagically behead a foe. This also seems to be the MO of Monty Python's vorpal bunny. Interestingly, the fourth installment of the Quest for Glory series of computer games that I played when I was younger, features the vorpal bunny as a monster to fight (unfortunately, there wasn't an option to go galumphing back).

It's actually in several games. Check out the Wiki on "Vorpal Bunny" :)

We have a 100 blessing winner!!

IIRC, the vorpal sword didn't automatically decapitate a foe. It only happened on a 'natural 20' on a d20. It's been over twenty years since I played, so that would have been AD&D, Second Edition. I have no idea how things have changed since then, especially since Wizards of the Coast 'acquired' the game from TSR.

We still have 100 blessings out there to the first one to correctly identify the source of this quote:

Does your Vorpal Blade go 'snicker-snak'...or does it just 'snicker'?

Ya might really need to be an old-timer to get this one!!

( By the way...the way I remember the quote is from "Dragon Magazine" I used to have issues #1-129 )

We have a winner!!!

It was an advertisment for dice. Their dice were better for some reason and they guaranteed that your vorpal blade would snicker-snack instead of just snicker.

I didn't want to give away all the details of the game mechanics, but yes, that is how it works. In 3rd ed. (WotC's version), the head is severed upon a successful critical hit, which doesn't necessarily require a natural 20 (if you roll within the weapon's critical threat range, you roll again, and if that roll would hit your target, it's a critical, and if it's a vorpal weapon and the target has some discernable head, it is decapitated).

Did you ever play 2nd Edition? Do you have any idea how they compare? I've heard that 3rd Edition was written so people can play out battles more like the Forgotten Realms novels...especially Driz'zt Do'Urden!

I used to play 2nd Ed. before everyone switched to 3rd Ed. I've actually forgotten a lot of the old rules now. I like that in 3rd Ed. you don't have to fool around with THAC0 (I mean, you get used to it, but the newer system is much more intuitive), and also some other features were more streamlined, and some of them make a little more sense (like the skills system instead of non-weapon proficiencies). Multiclassing causes fewer headaches in 3rd. 3rd Ed. does seem to be a ploy to sell more miniatures. The combat system is obviously designed for miniatures on a grid map. I'm sure there are plenty of Drizzt copycats out there who love the system. But it's not a bad system. One thing I really prefer about 2nd Ed. is all the supplementary material. Forgotten Realms (gag!) was updated for 3rd, but some of the more interesting campaign worlds, like Dark Sun, have not been.
