  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.
  • We hope the site problems here are now solved, however, if you still have any issues, please start a ticket in Contact Us

Are any of you angry at God?

Did you used to believe? If so, what happened.

If an atheist was angry at God, he wouldn't be an atheist, but a theist who's angry at God. Atheists, by default, do not believe that there is a god to be angry at to begin with. That's all the term "atheism" expresses, really.

If I were angry at god, why would I be atheist? Rather I think I'd be a devil worshipper because for me to be angry at god, I'd have to believe in him. It makes no sense to say that I'm an atheist because I'm angry at god- how can I be angry at something I don't believe exists, and that I don't have a vested interest in (like the antagonist of a novel). To say I'm angry at god makes as much sense as saying I'm angry at Zues or the tooth fairy.

Yes, I used to believe, when I was a young. Around 14 or so it became glaringly obvious that the christian mythos just didn't make sense to me, that realization came from a variation on the 'who made god' argument. I still was saddled with all the religious baggage and needs for particular types of religious thought so I spent many years jumping amongst religions, primarily polytheistic religions such as wicca and shamanism. Eventually I came to the realization that I was refusing to accept the possibility of there being no magic, no god, no afterlife or reincarnation because I was afraid- afraid of a purely naturalistic universe, afraid of there being no continuation after death.

After understanding that fear is the progenitor of my religious conviction, I was able to critically analyze it and see if my decision based upon fear was in line with my decision based upon reality. I found that the two were not in agreement, so I side with my decision based upon reality. For this reason, I believe much of religion arises from two sources: Indoctrination at a young age and fear.

I try to avoid anger at imaginary characters. It strikes me as unhealthy. ;)

I am unsure how to respond to this. I used to believe as a child, but I have heard some hear state that this is not real belief. As I got older and started learning about the world around me I found that what I was told of God and how he functioned looked nothing like how I experienced the world to work. As I kept questioning the world around me I found more and more issues with the God of the bible that made no sense. Eventually I concluded that God was either not real, or so far from what humans thought him to be that he might as well be not real.

*cough*

Eh, I "believed" until I was like 10 or so, in the same way that I believed in Sinterklaas (who functions as the source of Santa Claus, btw). Parents say X, so I'm sure it's true, that kind of thing.

I've never really had a deconversion moment, just that when I started thinking I quite naturally rejected the idea of God existing. The older I got the more convinced I became about my position.

Elaborating more than that is really going into General Apologetics territory, so I'll leave it at that.

(and no, I'm not angry at God, for the reason already stated.. if I was angry at Him, I wouldn't be an atheist =))
