I see it this opinion a lot, these days. Most recently, in the Eastern Orthodox forum here. A couple of weeks before that, it was a Lutheran bishop who said it. If I remember correctly, I first encountered the thought in a Youtube talk or interview with NT Wright. He has a lot of influence, in the circles where I've spent my last couple of years. But did he invent the thought? Did the orthodox? Did someone else?
In my country, the atonement issue was huge in early 20th century. Several denominations split over it, since everyone pretty much considered other views than their own heretical.
In short, how did we get from there to here?
