John 1:
Who told Peter?
Early on, he knew John the Baptizer and Andrew applied these two titles to Jesus. He knew these titles intellectually. He also learned about them from Jesus' teachings and from observing the signs/miracles. Finally, the Father revealed them to his spirit. Then, he declared these titles of Jesus as a statement of faith.
John the Baptizer knew Jesus was the Son of God. Andrew knew Jesus was the Messiah:32 Then John testified, “I saw the Spirit descending from heaven like a dove and resting on Him. 33 I myself did not know Him, but the One who sent me to baptize with water told me, ‘The man on whom you see the Spirit descend and rest is He who will baptize with the Holy Spirit.’ 34 I have seen and testified that this is the Son of God.”
Nathanael knew both:41 The first thing Andrew did was to find his brother Simon and tell him, “We have found the Messiah” (that is, the Christ).
But then in Matthew 16:49“Rabbi,” Nathanael answered, “You are the Son of God! You are the King of Israel!”
Peter believed15“But what about you?” he asked. “Who do you say I am?”
16 Simon Peter answered, “You are the Messiah, the Son of the living God.”
- Jesus was the Messiah, and
- he was the Son of God.
Jesus spoke in a limited negative: This was not only revealed to you by flesh and blood, but also more importantly by my Father in heaven.17 Jesus replied, “Blessed are you, Simon son of Jonah, for this was not revealed to you by flesh and blood, but by my Father in heaven.
