If the Ukranians' battle against their invaders goes badly, you will just be postponing far more dangerous wars--starting in Latvia and Lithuania, creeping towards Poland and Yugoslavia and Czechoslovakia...

The President we don't need is the one who admires ruthless totalitarian dictators like Vladimir Putin, who ordered the invasion.

The war never would have happened if Trump was in office.
And Ukranians would now be saluting the Hammer and Sickles---as would most of Eastern Europe while Trump made speeches praising Putin's initiative and action.

We need to choose our battles carefully. Starting wars in Afghanistan and Iran when the 9/11 bombers were Saudis was crazy.

But stopping a totalitarian former superpower with nothing going for it besides oil and a giant nuclear arsenal from attempting world domination? Now that is a noble cause.

The only way that there wouldn't have been a war was either Putin decided not to invade or Ukraine decided not to resist. As we don't live in some fantasy land, neither option was available.

Options for the rest of us are then to support the Ukraine or not. A map of Eastern Europe and a basic understanding of European history would be handy in making that decision. I'll let you Google both.

And where you live might have a bearing on how dangerous you personally think Putin is (checks to see where poster lives).

I could picture Trump slowly disengaging from NATO and European allies generally at a pace that might have kept Putin from his invasion long enough to last a second Trump term. Maybe Trump would have drawn out that process enough to keep Putin happy with the incremental gains.

Otoh, sooner or later Putin was going to ramp up his empire resurrection ambitions, and he's not getting any younger. And the cost of us pulling away from long standing freedom loving friends and turning towards tyrants would be too much to bear imo.

Also, I hope no one at all here is falling for this sick notion of Putin as a sort of white-knight Christian/traditionalist bulwark against the "decadent west."

He KGB at the core and interested in religion only to the extent it can serve himself and his vision of empire renewed.

That Russian Navy base in Crimea has always belonged to Russia.

This. It is Washington's war, and Washington can end it at any time...

This is Moscow's war:

'Washington' didn't illegally occupy and annex Crimea in 2014
'Washington' didn't send 'little green men' into Luhansk and Donestk just three months later
'Washington' didn't rotate more than 40,000 combat troops through separatist regions over the course of eight years
'Washington' didn't provide separatists in Luhansk and Donestk with modern arms, armour, air defense systems and logistics - leading to the shooting down of a commercial airliner in the process
'Washington' didn't pay mercenary groups/PMCs to train separatists and attack Ukrainian military and civil infrastructure
'Washington' didn't launch a massive and illegal invasion of a neighbouring sovereign state
'Washington' didn't conduct shame referendums in occupied territories
'Washington' didn't try to prevent it's neighbour from negotiating political, economic and military ties with Western powers
'Washington' isn't conducting nightly cruise missile and guided drone attacks against civilian targets

This is Kiev's war too:

It wasn't Washington that stopped Russia forces in Kiev, Donestk and Kherson - it was Ukrainian troops
It wasn't Washington that counterattacked and pushed Russian forces out of Kiev, Kherson and Kharkiv - it was Ukrainian troops
It wasn't Washington that blunted Russia's winter offensive to a standstill - it was Ukrainian troops

Russia is the one that can end this war - by packing up and going home. This is a war of geopolitics and self-interest for Russia.

For Ukraine, this is a war of survival.

You do know that Crimea and Donestk are and have been mostly Russian and Ukraine has been attacking them for many years ... right?

Are you for sending American troops when it comes to that?

Because Russia has been sending troops in and supporting the 'sepratist' movements in those oblasts. That is what Ukraine has been fighting there, not America.

No single American president will end the war. Vote out Putin if you want to end the war.
