Who invented the pejorative term "Noodling"?

Perhaps I'm old, but I was offended when some youngster last century dismissed "Happy Trails" by Quicksilver Messenger Service as "Noodling".

Have you really listened to it?, I thought. Those guitarists are telling a story.

He preferred the Brothers. I suppose he was suspicious of anything longer than 4 minutes, with any kind of instrumental breaks.

But maybe there was some "noodling" from axemen of the 70s? Can you think of any people just being self-indulgent?

But Gerry Garcia on "Dark Star"? Never. It's just ignorance and the inability to give something time.

It just means long boring self-indulgent solos especially on the guitar.

when i use the term noodling in reference to my guitar im pretty much just playing what ever comes into my head, not sticking to a set scale or theme.
