Acts 1:24 -26

24. And they prayed, and said, Thou, Lord, which knowest the hearts of all men, shew whether of these two thou hast chosen,
25. That he may take part of this ministry and apostleship, from which Judas by transgression fell, that he might go to his own place.
26. And they gave forth their lots; and the lot fell upon Matthias; and he was numbered with the eleven apostles.

I believe their intentions were pure. But God had a plan that they couldn't even imagine.

I think Paul was meant to be the last of all of the major Apostles who contributed to the growth of the church (this is a personal belief)

His writings are yet a major contributor to the growth of the modern church.

I often think of Christ saying he who is last will be first, when Paul comes to my mind.

Scripture makes it clear that the eleven remaining Apostles considered St Matthias as the proper successor. I have seen no Scripture that indicates that St Paul was intended to replace Judas or that there was ever any contraversy. St Paul was a great man and evangelist, but I see no reason to believe that God did not intend Mattias to assume Judas's place.

Phileo, Here is Paul's report.
1 Corinthians 15:8-10
8 And last of all he was seen of me also, as of one born out of due time.
9 For I am the least of the apostles, that am not meet to be called an apostle, because I persecuted the church of God.
10 But by the grace of God I am what I am: and his grace which was bestowed upon me was not in vain; but I laboured more abundantly than they all: yet not I, but the grace of God which was with me.
