Do you say/think: “Our Father, please …” or

“Oh, Jesus, please …” or

Something else.

I’m not referring to “In the name of the Father, Son, and Holy Spirit,”

Or “In the name of Jesus,” but comments are fine.

I address God, not as a literal person, but the truth that underlies all that is.

So something like this:

"Absolute, that which is all this and that which isn't anything in particular, the truth of all, and the essence of this present experience..."

Or,

"That in which all this exists, yet is no-thing among the existent, and that which all owe their being..."

Wow, I didn't expect that.

I pray to The Father when I’m making requests and giving thanks but I do also give thanks to Christ for His sacrifice and to the Holy Spirit for His guidance, and I always end each prayer by saying “I love you Father, I love you Jesus, and I love you Holy Spirit, in Jesus name I pray, amen.”

To many people grumble and complain and call that prayer. God wants faith and an attitude of gratitude, praise and thanksgiving. WE read our Bible and pray to know the will of God so we can know what prayers God wants to answer. He gives us the desire and the delight of our heart when we align our heart with His Heart. We are to worship and give praise, honor and glory onto God. All the more when we are united together as one with our brothers and sisters in the Lord.

Heb 4:16
"Let us then approach God’s throne of grace with confidence, so that we may receive mercy and find grace to help us in our time of need."

In the Bible, the attitude of the heart is indeed emphasized as crucial in our relationship with God and in prayer:

  1. Prayer as Incense: In Revelation 5:8, it says, "Each one had a harp and they were holding golden bowls full of incense, which are the prayers of the saints." This imagery illustrates that sincere prayers, offered with faith and gratitude, are pleasing to God.
  2. Heart Attitude: Psalm 51:17 says, "The sacrifices of God are a broken spirit; a broken and contrite heart, O God, you will not despise." This highlights the importance of humility and genuine repentance.
  3. Faith and Thanksgiving: Philippians 4:6 encourages us, "Do not be anxious about anything, but in every situation, by prayer and petition, with thanksgiving, present your requests to God." This underscores the need for gratitude and trust.
  4. Unity in Worship: Hebrews 10:24-25 advises us to "consider how we may spur one another on toward love and good deeds, not giving up meeting together, as some are in the habit of doing, but encouraging one another—and all the more as you see the Day approaching." This emphasizes the importance of communal worship and mutual encouragement.
Aligning our hearts with God's will, seeking His guidance through Scripture, and approaching Him with gratitude and faith are indeed key aspects of a fruitful spiritual life.

Sometimes I say/think one or the other ... it don't matter they are both God.

I often address my prayers to "Heavenly Father", or "Jah", as I feel it to be more intimate and respectful. My God understands my heart. As Romans 8:26 reminds me that even when I struggle to find the right words, the Spirit intercedes for me. Thus, I end my prayers with "in Jesus' name" brings everything full circle, acknowledging the grace we've received through Him.

Jesus said when praying out loud to the Father that He did for the benefit of those listening.

Since no one's listening but God, I tend to pray silently using hand signs like the sign of the cross.

"O merciful Father"
"Lord Jesus Christ"
"O Holy Spirit"
"Kind and loving God"
"Lord, ..."
"Most Holy God and Trinity"

This is true both when I pray spontaneous prayers and when I pray regular prayers.

For example the most common prayer that I pray is the Jesus prayer, the long version is "Lord Jesus Christ, Son of God, have mercy on me, a sinner" shorter versions include "Lord, have mercy" or "Jesus, have mercy on me".

I also regularly pray the Lord's Prayer.

I will often also pray to invite the Holy Spirit to bring me peace, "Come Holy Spirit, bring me peace."

Sometimes my prayers are just praise, often the Glora Patri, "Glory to the Father, and to the Son, and to the Holy Spirit, as it was in the beginning, is now, and ever shall be, world without end."

Often my personal prayers are a mix of regular prayer and spontaneous prayer, or a blend of the two.

"Most Holy Trinity, God, King of the Universe, have mercy on me, strengthen my faith, keep me, hold me, preserve me, grant me Your peace."

Sometimes my only prayer is the sign of the cross, or the wordless silence of my often confused mind and aching heart desperate for God.
