  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

I know, but you gotta admit it's pretty damn funny.

Excuse me, could you please edit the curse word from your post here? Highly offensive. Good way to get sent straight to H E double hockey sticks!

Love your avatar though. Ever notice the CN Tower looks a little like that? Kinda? Sorta?

I don't know. I feel like this "Obama is the anti-Christ" stuff is beginning to ruin this forum for everyone because it's done so many times, and it's done every day. A large majority of people want it to stop. Should we allow 2-3 people to run the rest of us off the forum because we just can't take it anymore? Or should we try to work towards some guidelines for basic civility so that everyone can enjoy the forum?

that sure is a forgiving attitude.....things like this bother me more than off color avatars...

I'm just saying I know what I could expect if I asked her to remove it personally.

Can someone tell me what business an obsene gesture like that has on a Catholic internet forum?

Fish - I wouldn't worry too much about the political threads. I have to believe that people are smart enough not to make their decisions about our next CIC based on what they read in OBOB. When I see posts like the ones you're complaining about (on either side of the political aisle) it makes me question the character of the poster much more than the candidate. Have a little faith in humanity, buddy. Most people aren't idiots and very few people, maybe even nobody, is going to let anything they read on CF effect the way they vote. I hope most people independently examine all the candidates fairly before they make up their minds, and I trust that candidate's middle names are not going to enter into the decision at all. We are a Western democracy, our people are better than that......right?

FTR. Fish - I think you're a crybaby for reporting things that you don't want to see. Tad, I think you're a crybaby for reporting the things you don't want to see. I like both of you, and have never had a run in with either of you that I recall. Stop reporting stuff, both of you! Let the forum move on whatever course we all set for it. When Peter's anti Obama threads stop getting responses, they'll drop off the page. The best thing to do with a thread (or poster) you can't stand is to ignore them, not tell on them.

Many of the anti-Catholics on this forum(and there's allot) say the same thing about the Pope. And it's constant - not just election time. No one complains though - at least not to the extent that the Obama statements seem to ignite.

Who reported me for my avatar, you nameless faceless coward?
Wasn't me Chelle. Promise

I don't report anyone as it is, because I think I say things that can lead to people reporting me.

I'd like to think you're right, but I do think this stuff (false personal attacks on politicians) can sometimes influence people. After all, the people posting it probably heard it somewhere and believed it, right?

Even setting that aside, though, it is at the point where a lot of people are cutting down on their posting or considering leaving over some of these political slander threads. I'm hopelessly addicted, so I'll probably stick around. But I'd hate to lose a lot of our better posters because they can't take what's going on. It's not worth it.

What is the avatar? Anyone gonna tell me? I can't see any of them. Stupid server...

The avatar is a black and white sketch of a hand with it's middle finger raised. For those who live outside the United States, that's considered an obscene gesture in our American (US) culture.

Of course, most of us aren't above using it on occasion. I did it to a guy who seemed to be trying to run me over a few months back. I was walking through a parking lot, the lights were out in his parked car, and then he instantly started pulling out and I practically had to dive out of the way. My friend walking with me shouted a warning to me, otherwise this dude would have hit me. I didn't flip him off at first, but then I sort of gestured at him with my arm outstretched like "What are you trying to do to me, man?", thinking maybe it was an honest mistake, but instead of gesturing apologetically or just driving away, he started getting mad and yelling through his window at me. Then I flipped him off. I kind of think he deserved it. We probably would have wound up in a fist fight if not for some other people in his car who seemed to be urging him to drive away, which he did. That might be the closest I've come in my adult life to getting into a brawl.

Nice post.

Hummm...all avatars aren't showing now....hummmm....and I didn't do that either! Lol...

"Most people aren't idiots and very few people, maybe even nobody, is going to let anything they read on CF effect the way they vote." I that's so.

The Mimi avatar or the current finger, which I do find objectionable? I can ignore very well so it wasn't me. I don't have to read whoever's post if I don't like and/or can literally ignore them. (First and last board I was on was a real tough one. )

Reading now so carry on.
