Why is Judaism one of the major four?
It's absolutely tiny, there are quite a few Religions with higher adherent ammount.
Buddhism, Taoism , Sikhism, Shintoism, Tribal African, Juche, to name just a few Judaism is the worlds 13th largest faith.

However that nit-picking aside, I think neither of those four are correct but certain sects of Hindu teaching have it closest.

By what standard is it "historical"?

Historically, most of the beliefs Syrokal listed are significant and certainly more numerous than the initially listed 4.

The bible and human history are good starting points. Sikhism by comparison is just over 1500 years old.

Unless you meant Sikhism was founded in the 15th century, which is what wikipedia is telling me.

However, this criterion does not apply for many of the religions Syrokal listed.

Nah, it's from my dad's side, one of my great aunts were Jewish. And my nan on my dad's side uses a few Jewish phrases.
I'm not even sure of the details, asking about such has always seemed like an insensitive thing to do, as my great aunt has passed away.:o

Both sides of my family are of North London working class background; so anything is possible considering north London has had a notable Jewish community for a while.

Buddhism is older than Christianity and has more followers than Judaism, so that makes 5 major religions by your requirements. Then, of course, a large following indicates a "major" religion, so Chinese traditional religion has to be included, which makes 6. Then there's the "irreligious" category, which is not a religion in itself but is a position on all the others (and so applies to the question "which is right"), and by definition has existed as long as religion has - there are over a billion people who don't subscribe to any religion worldwide.

So really, there are 7 major religious groups (I know "irreligion" isn't a religion but it does fit in this category). I haven't even started counting all the African religious traditions and the religions that exist among various indigenous populations. If we group those into two categories then we get 9, but the reality is that the number will be a lot higher than that.

Then why is Judaism on the list? Buddhism is almost as old, and has a far larger following.

Your list of major religions should really look something more like this.
