  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

Click here for a look at the History of the Sabbath

"THE history of the Sabbath embraces the period of 6000 years. The seventh day is the Sabbath of the Lord. The acts which constituted it such were, first, the example of the Creator; secondly, his placing his blessing upon the day; and thirdly, the sanctification or divine appointment of the day to a holy use. The Sabbath, therefore, dates from the beginning of our world's history. The first who Sabbatized on the seventh day is God the Creator; and the first seventh day of time is the day which he thus honored. The highest of all possible honors does, therefore, pertain to the seventh day. Nor is this honor confined to the first seventh day of time; for so soon as God had rested upon that day, he appointed the seventh day to a holy use, that man might hallow it in memory of his Creator.

This divine appointment grows out of the nature and fitness of things, and must have been made directly to Adam, for himself and wife were then the only beings who had the days of the week to use. As it was addressed to Adam while yet in his uprightness, it must have been given to him as the head of the human family. The fourth commandment bases all its authority upon this original mandate of the Creator, and must, therefore, be in substance what God commanded to Adam and Eve as the representatives of mankind.

The patriarchs could not possibly have been ignorant of the facts and the obligation which the fourth commandment shows to have originated in the beginning, for Adam was present with them for a period equal to more than half the Christian dispensation. Those, therefore, who walked with God in the observance of his commandments did certainly hallow his Sabbath.

The observers of the seventh day must therefore include the ancient godly patriarchs, and none will deny that they include also the prophets and the apostles. Indeed, the entire church of God embraced within the records of inspiration were Sabbath-keepers. To this number must be added the Son of God.

What a history, therefore, has the Sabbath of the Lord! It was instituted in Paradise, honored by several miracles each week for the space of forty years, proclaimed by the great Lawgiver from Sinai, observed by the Creator, the patriarchs, the prophets, the apostles, and the Son of God! It constitutes the very heart of the law of God, and so long as that law endures, so long shall the authority of this sacred institution stand fast.

Such being the record of the seventh day, it may well be asked, How came it to pass that this day has been abased to the dust, and another day elevated to its sacred honors? The Scriptures nowhere attribute this work to the Son of God. They do, however, predict the great apostasy in the Christian church, and that the little horn, or man of sin, the lawless one, should think to change times and laws.

It is the object of the present volume to show, 1. The Bible record of the Sabbath; 2. The record of the Sabbath in secular history; 3. The record of the Sunday festival, and of the several steps by which it has usurped the place of the ancient Sabbath.

The writer has attempted to ascertain the exact truth in the case by consulting the original authorities as far as it has been possible to gain access to them. The margin will show to whom he is mainly indebted for the facts presented in this work, though it indicates only a very small part of the works consulted. He has given the exact words of the historians, and has endeavored, conscientiously, to present them in such a light as to do justice to the authors quoted.

It is not the fault of the writer that the history of the Sunday festival presents such an array of frauds and of iniquities in its support. These are, in the nature of the case, essential to its very existence, for the claim of a usurper is necessarily based in fraud. The responsibility for these rests with those who dare commit or uphold such acts. The ancient Sabbath of the Lord has never needed help of this kind, and never has its record been stained by fraud or falsehood. Battle Creek, Mich., Nov. 18,1873 J. N. A." To all those people who are looking for the correct day.

You sound like the Pharasees and Saducees of the Old Testament. They kept looking for information by studying history and interpreting the Law. Puffing themselves up with their own wisdom and knowledge. The New Testament does away with all that. EVERYDAY IS THE LORD'S DAY. Didn't Jesus say pray without ceasing?

Actually I don't find it hard to believe that you speak and message this way.

Not only is the Bible made of the Old and New Testaments, but each individual's spiritual life is a new and old testament. When you first are awakend to God, you enter into the Old Testament. (most churches tell you that you have been Born Again at this point:THAT IS WRONG). The truth is you have entered into the family of God and placed under the Law. When you finally realize that you cannot keep the Law ON YOUR OWN, then you offer yourself upto God and God (i'm also interjecting Jesus here because all authority has been passed on to Jesus) as a living sacrifice. God burns away the flesh (just like the symbolic sacrifices of old) and what is left? Yup the Spirit is left. A pure Spirit. (Now some individuals' sacrifice is not accepted because it is not without blemish). It is the combination of both the old and new testament in a spiritual life that produces the BORN AGAIN EXPERIENCE. When God changes you, then and only then can you keep the Law. The Law of Legalists? NO !!! The Law of mercy, forgiveness and repentence.

Anyway, can you see what you people are doing? You're looking for which particular day is the Sabbath. You]re going back into the Old Testament of your spiritual life. Or maybe you're still in the Old Testament of your spiritual lives and you have not entered into the New Testament of your spiritual life? Don't you think it idolatrious to appoint one day over the rest? Wouldn't a SvnDayAdv help another brother or sis in Christ if they were in trouble? Woudn't the Sunday Sabbath keeping crown help the SvnDayAdv?

Check yourself, Examine that part of yourself, instead of puffing yourselves up with wasteful and futile egotism. Ask Jesus to provide that gift of the Sabbath. The Holy Spirit/The TRUE NEW TESTAMENT

If you believe in the trinity then you believe Christ had a hand in writting the commandments.

What say Jesus:

Jhn 14:15 If ye love me, keep my commandments.

Jhn 15:10 If ye keep my commandments, ye shall abide in my love; even as I have kept my Father's commandments, and abide in his love.

1Jo 2:6 He that saith he abideth in him ought himself also so to walk, even as he walked.

1Jo 3:4 Whosoever committeth sin transgresseth also the law: for sin is the transgression of the law.

Rom 6:15 What then? shall we sin [shall we trangress the Law], because we are not under the law, but under grace? God forbid.

Because of Christ's sacrifice Christians are no longer under the penanlty of the Law but we are still expected to avoid sin by being obedient.

Grace is a free gift from Christ and Christ is the only path to salvation. Obedience to God is a sign of the process of Sanctification.

so, are you saying the NT does away with wisdom and knowledge? Did God waste His own time by having the OT written down? Did God waste the Apostle's time by telling them to preach a message that means nothing?

So, would you say then the creeds are also wrong to learn? like the Nicene Creed? And we shouldn't learn that?

No, us SABBATARIANS (note: not SDA) keep the day God picked as a Holy Day. But you should read the thread, it has been stated it is not about doing nothing for no one, but a day for doing good.

In what way is anyone puffing themselves up? by being learned? is studying now to be looked down on? By presenting the truth boldly. You may need to clarify youself more on this topic.

Hey, Chris

Please try ACTIVELY to do good works. Forget about all that puffing of the flesh with knowledge like which day is the Sabbath.

I GUARANTEE YOU, YOU WILL SEE A MIRACLE IN YOUR LIFE AND IN THE LIFE OF THE PEOPLE YOU HELP. NOBODY IS INTERESTED IN SOMEBODY'S WISDOM ABOUT WHAT THIS WORD MEANS AND THAT PHRASE MEANS. You think Jesus did miracles and helped out because he had no wisdom or knowledge? No, of course not. However, doing good works is the only thing that gets people interested in what you say. You say you have faith? I'll show you my faith by my works. Faith without works is DEAD !!!!!!!

Well faith and works is a balance. The SDA church has one of the largest medical misssonary programs in the world. We had several semi truck feeding and clothing victims at the Katerina disaster just like we do every year when diisasters strike in the US.

UPDATED: ADRA Continues to Distribute Aid for Survivors of Hurricane Katrina

Five weeks after Hurricane Katrina tore through the Gulf Coast killing more than a thousand people, and leaving more than a million others displaced across the nation, the Adventist Development and Relief Agency (ADRA) International remains active in the affected areas, providing clothing, food, emergency supplies, personal items, and funding to meet the needs of Katrina evacuees.

ADRA has committed $1 million for Katrina relief and to date has allocated close to half of that amount to local partners and organizations directly involved in providing relief assistance. ADRA has also shipped more than $1.2 million of clothing, disaster materials, food, and supplies to warehouses operated by Adventist Community Services (ACS) in New Iberia, Louisiana; Mobile, Alabama; and Houston, Texas.

ADRA is working in partnership with various organizations, such as ACS, the Southwestern Conference of Seventh-day Adventists, the Gulf Conference of Seventh-day Adventists, and others, to provide materials for the warehouses, and to purchase consumables, such as food, supplies, water, and personal items. ADRA is also funding implementing partners that are providing meals for evacuees.

Correction from the last update: Although the Panama City Seventh-day Adventist Church in Florida is preparing their mobile kitchen to provide meals for evacuees, the kitchen is yet to be functional. A portion of the funding given will also be used to either provide temporary shelter or to purchase consumables for evacuees, such as food, personal items, cleaning supplies, bottled water, and more. The church has provided more than 200 meals for evacuees to date, as well as delivered relief items in Alabama and Mississippi to more than 400 families.

The Gulfhaven Seventh-day Adventist Church in Houston has also received over $100,000 from ADRA for feeding programs in Southeastern Texas. Soon after the hurricane hit, the church began providing up to 1,000 meals a day for evacuees. ³Our goal is 3,000 meals a day,² said Carlos Turcios, pastor of the GulfhavenChurch.

Baltimore Adventist Community Services (BACS) is also providing relief supplies for 200 evacuees who are now residing in the metropolitan Baltimore area. They are donating groceries, blankets, and storage containers for the evacuees. This project is valued at $5,000.

To make a donation to ADRA¹s Katrina, please contact ADRA at 1.800.424.ADRA (2372) or donate online at www.adra.org.

ADRA is present in 125 countries, providing community development and emergency management without regard to political or religious association, age, or ethnicity in all of its programs, including its response to Hurricane Katrina.

Additional information about ADRA can be found at www.adra.org

Great Great Stuff. Great to hear. It just doesn't make sense to focus in on which day the Sabbath is on.

Its not our only focus but when Christians talk it is the most noteable difference so the most often mentioned. SDA also have one of if not the largest protestant missionary programs in the world to spread the gospel of Jesus Christ. I has the only world wide TV network [pretty sure] where you can put up a dish antena any where on the Inhabited world and pick up the good news of the Gospel of Jesus Christ. Were have workers digging water wells in Africa and other public works projects.

The modern day calendar being used in this thread to teach that Saturday is the sabbath is not found in the Bible either!

Exodus 20:8-11 says, ""Remember the Sabbath day by keeping it holy. Six days you shall labor and do all your work, but the seventh day is a Sabbath to the LORD your God. On it you shall not do any work, neither you, nor your son or daughter, nor your manservant or maidservant, nor your animals, nor the alien within your gates. For in six days the LORD made the heavens and the earth, the sea, and all that is in them, but he rested on the seventh day. Therefore the LORD blessed the Sabbath day and made it holy."

Work six days and take a day off. If your week starts on Wednesday, then worship on Tuesday. The original command does not mention any days. Our calendar has the week starting on Monday, so we worship on Sunday. No big deal. Saturday, Sunday, what's the difference?

If we wanted to know what the true Sabbath is, you'd have to figure out the exact day, month, and year of the first day of creation and count off by seven. Since we can't figure out that information (and we aren't commanded to) for ourselves, I say just work six days, and take the seventh off and devote it too HIM.

Only the 7th day of the week has been blessed and made Holy by God.

Well God himself told the Israelites EXACTLY which day of the week was the seventh day of creation by giving twice as much manna on the 6th day before the 7th day Sabbath and None for all of Israel on Sabbath the 7th day of the week. On the Sabbath none of Israel recieved Manna. That shoots holes in the "one in seven" theory.

Exo 16:22-23 And it came to pass, that on the sixth day they gathered twice as much bread, two omers for one man: and all the rulers of the congregation came and told Moses. And he said unto them, This is that which the LORD hath said, To morrow is the rest of the holy sabbath unto the LORD: bake that which ye will bake today, and seethe that ye will seethe; and that which remaineth over lay up for you to be kept until the morning.

Exo 16:28-30And the LORD said unto Moses, How long refuse ye to keep my commandments and my laws? See, for that the LORD hath given you the sabbath, therefore he giveth you on the sixth day the bread of two days; abide ye every man in his place, let no man go out of his place [To gather Manna on the seventh day.] So the people rested on the seventh day.

Those who worship on the Sunday have found out what the first day of the week is so not too hard to then work out what day the is the seventh is.

My calculations says that is Saturday.

I would think you would say that Sunday is the first day of the week.

re: "What are your thoughts [about Passover, Unleavened Bread and First Fruits]?"

re: "I wonder where rstrats went?"

Sorry for the tardiness in responding to your posts. You’ve probably been running to your computer every hour to see if I’ve commented. You’re probably exhausted from lack of sleep. HA,HA,HA,HEE,HEE,HO,HA,HA,HEE,HEE,HO,HO,HA,HEE,HEE,HO,HA,HA, HEE,HEE,HEE,HO,HO,HA,HA,HA,HEE,HEE..........................................................

Seriously, though, I have been going back and forth with the crucifixion week Passover question for years and have yet to come to a conclusion/conviction about a number of things surrounding it. I shall continue to ponder it.

re: "...I have always taken a ‘high day’ to mean a double Sabbath where a Feast Day Sabbath falls on a Seventh day Sabbath."

I have searched for Jewish documentation that limits a "high day" to the seventh day of the week and so far have not found any.

re: "The Term 3 days and 3 nights is an idiom."

As regards the Jewish practice of counting any part of a day as a whole day I would agree, but when "nights" is added to "days" to yield the phrase "3 days AND 3 nights" it normally refers to a measurement of a consecutive time period where "day" refers to the light portion of a 24 hour period and "night" refers to the dark portion of a 24 hour period. No one In the history of apologetics as far as I know has ever presented any historical documentation that the phrase " 3 days AND 3 nights" was a unique first century idiom of Hebrew/Aramaic/Greek which could mean something different than what the phrase means in English.

re: "A Wednesday Crucifixion does not match the feast day type set forth in the Bible."

I am more inclined to go with a Thursday crucifixion. (Luke 24:21)

I did want to discuss the curcifixion and its type firstfruits with you. No I haven't lost sleep over it . I don't see that knowing which day the crucifixion was on is essential for salvation. I veiw it more as just interesting facts. I do think the Passover Nisan 14th / Unleavend Bread Nisan 15th / Firstfruits Nisan 16th was an important type of the actual crucifixion burial and resurrection od Christ and was put there to help the Jews to recognize that Christ was their passover Lamb.

A thursday crucifixion does not match up with the first example of Passover-Unleavened Bread-Firstfuits given in the Bible. The only correct Type-Antitype match would be a Friday Crucifixion nisan 14th and Saturday Feast of Unlevaned Bread Nisan 15th and Sunday Resurection Nisan 16th.
