Where Satan's Throne Is

“And to the angel of the church in Pergamum write: The One who has the sharp two-edged sword says this: ‘I know where you dwell, where Satan’s throne is; and you hold fast My name, and did not deny My faith even in the days of Antipas, My witness, My faithful one, who was killed among you, where Satan dwells. But I have a few things against you, because you have there some who hold the teaching of Balaam, who kept teaching Balak to put a stumbling block before the sons of Israel, to eat things sacrificed to idols and to commit acts of immorality. So you also have some who in the same way hold the teaching of the Nicolaitans. ​

“’Therefore repent; or else I am coming to you quickly, and I will make war against them with the sword of My mouth. He who has an ear, let him hear what the Spirit says to the churches. To him who overcomes, to him I will give some of the hidden manna, and I will give him a white stone, and a new name written on the stone which no one knows but he who receives it.’” (Revelation 2:12-17 NASB1995)​

How can this be applied to the church today? I live in the USA, so that is what I know, so I will write about what I know and have observed over my 75 years of life on this earth. And if you live somewhere that is different, then please ask the Lord if any of this applies to the church where you live. And if you live in the USA, but you have grown up in a very protected environment, and perhaps you have attended the same church gathering your whole life, you may not see where things are from a larger perspective.

These are the words of Jesus Christ to the church in a very specific location, so this may not apply to the church everywhere. But also we need to know that this was not speaking of just one congregation but of the collective body of Christ in the whole city. So one congregation may have been walking in purity of devotion to the Lord while another may not have been. But the church elders (overseers) were responsible for the church in the whole city, to make certain that they were living in line with the truth of the gospel.

That is not usually the case here in America. Usually the case here is that certain church congregations have put themselves under specific “church” denominations (against the will of God). And so they have made themselves accountable to those specific denominations, many of which have partnered with the ungodly and with the world via incorporating under (merging with) the state (the government). And they have turned their gatherings into businesses to be marketed to the world, all of which is forbidden by God.

So, what might this look like today? Satan definitely has a throne here in the USA, and it is evident in so many different areas, such as government, education, entertainment, the high divorce rate, the high number of people addicted to pornography, the high number of youth going after all sorts of wicked things, and the adulterous and idolatrous church, which is so popular today, altering and diluting the gospel of Christ to where they no longer teach biblical repentance and obedience to our Lord’s commands.

The church, which is the universal and collective body of Christ, the body of those who, by God-persuaded faith in Jesus Christ, have died with Christ to sin and who are now walking in obedience to our Lord’s commands, in the USA, has largely turned from God and gone the way of the world. Most are no longer teaching the necessity of death to sin and walks of obedience to God, but they are teaching that a mere profession of faith in Jesus Christ assures all of forgiveness of all sins and heaven as their eternal destiny.

So, sin is running rampant in so many of today’s “church” congregations. Dishonesty, moral corruption, self-indulgence, and all sorts of wickedness are being allowed to exist, because they have denied the authority of Christ over the church, and they have rejected the commandments of God, and they are following after the ways of man and of the flesh, instead, in order to “draw in large crowds of people from the world” into their gatherings. And the true gospel is being ignored and/or mischaracterized as something evil.

Therefore, the idolatrous and adulterous church here in the USA, and in the world, as a whole, is under the judgment of Almighty God. So this is a call of God to repent, to turn away from your sinful lifestyles, and to now walk in obedience to the Lord and to his commands, in the power of God at work within you. For if you do not repent, but you continue to walk in sin, and not in obedience to God, you will face the wrath of God, if not in this life, then definitely for all eternity. Lip service only will not assure you of heaven.
