All scriptural references are taken from the AKJV bible.
Before we continue allow me to redesignate the areas of the sanctuary as "area 1", "area 2" and "area 3" to facilitate placing the scriptures we are about to study in their proper place within the sanctuary.
Ex. 26: 33 & 34: "And thou shalt hang up the vail under the taches, that thou mayest bring in thither within the vail the ark of the testimony: and the vail shall divide unto you between the holy place and the most holy. And thou shalt put the mercy seat upon the ark of the testimony in the most holy place."
In this verse God is directing Moses to erect the vail beween the "Holy Place" and the Most Holy, or the Most Holy Place as described in verse 34. As the Ark of the Testimony (Covenant) is in the Most Holy and the vail is to be between it and the adjoining area we can therefore say that verse 33 belongs in area #2, for this is where we first see the vail as we proceed toward the Most Holy, and verse belongs in area #3. Notice that the wording of area 3 in verses 33 and 34 is different. In verse 33 area 3 is described as "Most Holy", in verse 34 the translators add the word "Place" thus making it "Most Holy Place", yet, we understand it to mean the same area of the Sanctuary. Keep this in mind as we continue on.
Ex. 28:29 & 35 "And Aaron shall bear the names of the children of Israel in the breastplate of judgment upon his heart, when he goeth in unto the holy place, for a memorial before the Lord continually." "And it shall be upon Aaron to minister: and his sound shall be heard when he goeth in unto the holy place before the Lord, and when he cometh out, that he die not."
Here we see that Aaron is to wear a breastplate of judgment bearing the names of the children of Israel and the golden bells and pomegranates when he enters the holy place in the presence of the Lord. Both verses refer to the same area, area #2, we know this because God only dwelt within the tented structure, never in the courtyard. The interceding veses describe the breastplate in detail.
Ex. 29:29-30 "And the holy garments of Aaron shall be his sons' after him, to be anointed therein, and to be consecrated in them. And that son that is priest in his stead shall put them on seven days when he cometh into the tabernacle of the congretation to minister in the holy place."
Here are the directions for the continuity of the priesthood through Aaron's sons. The holy garments are to be used in the same manner, in the Holy Place. Therefore, this verse is, again, in area #2.
Ex. 29:31-33 "And thou shalt take the ram of the consecration, and seethe his flesh in the holy place. And Aaron and his sons shall eat the flesh of the ram, and the bread that is in the basket, by the door of the tabernacle of the congregation. And they shall eat those things wherewith the atonement was made, to consecrate and to sanctify them: but a stranger shall not eat thereof, because they are holy."
Now we have a problem. I the holy place is area #2 then Aaron and his sons ar directed to "seethe" and "eat" the sacrifice here. Yet the instruments of sacrifice are in area #1, which we know as the courtyard. Why the discrepancy? Either area #1 is the holy place or area #2 is the holy place, unless we claim that both are the holy place and that is not what is taught. What is taught is that each area has its own significance and each is separate from th other. Understand also that no where in scripture do we find God dwelling in the courtyard, only in the holy place and the most holy place. But, here the courtyard is called the holy place. Remember that I told you to keep in mind Ex. 26:33 & 34? In verse 33 area #3 was call the "Most Holy" and in verse 34 the translator added the word "place" and mand it "Most Holy Place". But we understand that each verse meant the same area. That cannot be in this case. Either area #1 is the holy place or area #2 is the holy place. How do we determine which is and which isn't?
"We have many lessons to learn, and many to unlearn. God and heaven alone are infallible. Those who think that they will never have to give up a cherished view, never have occasion to change an opinion, will be disappointed. As long as we hold to our own ideas and opinions with determined persistency, we cannot have unity for which Christ prayed. - SM1 pg 37 (The Review and Herald, July 26, 1892)
Ellen white tells us that we are to continually search the scriptures for the the light that God has to give. In some cases we may have to change our views on some things we thought we knew. Our stubbornness in refusing to do so takes us from the truth, the church and ultimately from God.
"Revival signifies a renewal of spritual life, a quickening of the powers of mind and heart, a resurrection from spiritual death. Reformantion signifies reorganization, a change in ideas and theories, habits and practices. Reformation will not bring forth the good fruit of righteousness unless it is connected with the revival of the Spirit. Revival and reformation are to do their appointed work, and in doing this work they must blend." - SM1 pg 128 (The Review and Herald, Feb 25, 1902)
We often talk about revival, but revival cannot come unless we are willing to continue to grow and we can only do this if we are willing to dig deep into God's word to find the truths he wishes us to find. He provides to us His Holy Spirit to help us in this endeavor but we must be willing to learn and be taught by Him. Notice that this was written late in EGWs life. Many believe that she was given all that we were to know and that we need nothing else but what we have currently. But her writings do not indicate this at all. On many occasions, this is just but on example, she stresses the need to search the scriptures for new light and our requirement to let the Holy Spirit guide us.
