When Christ died on the Cross, he took on the sins of the whole earth...
If Christ is without sin, where did all of that sin go? Where is it now?
This question has been bugging me for awhile now...
Peace!

It isn't a quantitative substance. So it didn't "go" anywhere. It was atoned for. It had no more power over the believer.

Thanks guys...I was starting to think that I asked a question that no one wanted to answer.
Hammster, just because it has no more power over us believers, does that mean that it is not held in abeyance? How can something with no substance cause so much pain and suffering?...I know it doesn't "go" anywhere, that was a metaphor. What I meant was, what ultimately happened to it? Is there a passage that may help me understand?
Thanks, Tim...now I have ANOTHER question that is going to bug me!!!:D., unless the thinking is that unbelievers are the ones who's sin will be judged...yet the fact that they ARE unbelievers is what will ultimately keep them from the Glory of God.

What causes the pain is the fact that all sin robs God of glory. That's the ultimate result. So God must decide whether for forgive it and count it as nothing. But all forgiveness comes at a price. So either we pay the price (which we can't) or God does.

He became an offering for sin for us; He was nailed to the Cross.

So figuratively, the Scripture says it was taken away, being nailed to the Cross. (see Eph 2).

The price of all that sin was paid by Christ on the Cross. That puts Jesus in the rightful position to dispose of any and every sin as He sees fit.

"When Christ died on the Cross, he took on the sins of the whole earth..."

...and why is it believed that people will one day be judged for their sins??

Here come the worms.....

Rev 20:12.......and the dead were judged according to their works, by the things which were written in the books.
verse 13.......and they were judged each one according to his works.
verse 14 Then Death and Hades were cast into the lake of fire. This is the second death.
verse 15 And anyone not found written in the Book of Life was cast into the lake of fire.

It could be said that this applies only to those whose name is not in the book of life except there are several verses such as:
Romans 14:12
So then each of us shall give account of himself to God.

These verses say to me that those who have their name written in the book of life have their sins forgiven but somehow will still need to account (how exactly that will happen I don't know, I imagine when Gods asks for my accounting I will just hang my head, I mean how does one try to justify any action in the face of the Almighty?) for our actions.

I think 1 Cor 3:14,15 shed more light
If anyone's work which he has built on it endures, he will receive a reward.
If anyone;s work is burned, he will suffer loss; but he himself will be saved, yet so as through fire.

There are other verses that speak of a believers reward also.

This is sorta cute, with the cloud (and our sins) and being taken up and a cloud receiving Him (in whom we have redemption)

Isaiah 44:22 I have blotted out, as a thick cloud, thy transgressions, and, as a cloud, thy sins: return unto me; for I have redeemed thee.

Acts 1:9 And when he had spoken these things, while they beheld, he was taken up; and a cloud received him out of their sight.

Col 1:14 In whom we have redemption through his blood, even the forgiveness of sins:

Teagranny, you are almost there, keep growing in the knowledge of Him. John 5:24 "Most assuredly, I say to you, he who hears My word and believes in Him who sent Me has everlasting life, and shall not come into judgment, but pass from death into life". Romans 5:18-19 are also profound verses of scripture. Have a blessed day. Barry

Sin didn't stop existing, it still exists. Evil still exists. However, we now have a gaurdian(as Galations puts it) against sin. Where it was once the law, it is now faith in Christ, and remember, faith requires action. Read James if you don't believe me. I think more Christians nowadays needs to read James, its huge slap-in-the-face to most of them. Its nice to be slapped in the face by Jesus from time to time.
