When you get in a dispute with someone, How do you know the difference over "taking a stand" over an important principle for righteousness sake, or just being mean, judgmental, in a bad mood and feeling miserable, and taking it out on everyone else?

Here is a small scripture to use as a guide poste.

Brothers and sisters, if someone is caught in a sin, you who live by the Spirit should restore that person gently. But watch yourselves, or you also may be tempted.

Galatians 6:1

It seems to me that when two people are stubborn, they will each think they are "right", and the dispute divides the two parties, they will each tell their own versions of a story of the dispute, and try to either suck others in, by telling and re-hashing the stories, doing a good job with a made-up story, spending the next ten, twenty years, or maybe for the rest of their lives, holding a grudge, telling and re-hashing the story, trying and doing a good job at, trying to justify themselves and paint themselves as righteous or innocent, or the victim... It's all such a waste... I'm Guilty... Guilty as they come... I know right where I went wrong and I try to make-up and own up for my wrongs, I won't spend my life being angry, or holding a grudge against anyone for not being "perfect"...

Sometimes a gentle way, the gentle way only works on those with warm hearts, the cold hearted need a sharp rebuke, like Jesus loved the pharisees but look how he was with them, but how does this apply to the original post? How do you know the difference?
