• CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

Does anyone have a chart, or timeline, or credible source with good information on which year each of the Epistles of Paul was written in, and what the context was?

I'm mostly just looking for something like...

Romans- 60AD
1 Corinthians- 60AD
2 Corinthians- 60AD
Galatians- 60AD

Obviously the dates will change, I was just listing "60 AD" as an example.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks and God bless,

There should also be credible info in the IVP series 'Ancient Christian Commentary on Scripture' if you happen to have access to it. I have Romans,Corinthians, Galatians, Ephesians & Philippians. I'll try to check the intro when I get home.

I would also suggest the series for anyone serious in studying Scripture [/shameless plug]

I can tell you the backdrop within the book of Acts:

Acts 18:1 in Corinth: 1 & 2 Thes.
Acts 19:17 in Ephesus: Galatians (North Galatian) & 1 Cor.
Acts 20:1 in Macedonia: 2 Cor.
Acts 20:2 in Greece: Romans
Acts 28:16ff in prison: Philippians, Colossians, Ephesians & Philemon

There is some debate about Galatians. It could have been written before the council of Jerusalem, during Paul's 1st. missionary journey. This is known as the South Galatian theory.

After the book of Acts ends, Paul writes 1 Tim. & Titus. During his final imprisonment, he writes 2 Tim. He is martyred around 64 AD.

James was written some time prior to 60 AD

1 & 2 Peter, as well as Jude: sometime before 65 AD

1, 2 & 3 John: around 95 AD.

Hebrews is highly debated. It's not even certain who wrote it.

I have read somewhere that Galatians was probably the earlies book in the NT, written around 41 CE.
Hi. That could be. Paul quoted a lot from the OC Hebrew scriptures in that book.

I also found this interesting. This form of the greek word "cast" is only found in these 2 passages, and sometimes I can even view Paul as John visioning revelation, which I also feel could have been "visioned"/written shortly after the Cross or Pentecost.

Btw, what are others views on when Revelation could have been "visioned"/written?
Thoughts?

The only one who ever mentioned a date attached to the book of Revelation was St. Irenaeus. Everyone else after him uses his reference.

“We will not, however, incur the risk of pronouncing positively as to the name of Antichrist; for if it were necessary that his name should be distinctly revealed in this present time, it would have been announced by him who beheld the apocalyptic vision. For that was seen no very long time since, but almost in our day, towards the end of Domitian’s reign.” (Irenaeus, Against Heresies 5:30:3

In the original Greek, which was Irenaeus native language, it is uncertain as to whether the pronoun "that" was referring back to John himself, or the vision he saw. If it was to the vision, then it ocurred around 95 AD. If it was to John himself, then the other possible date for his exile on Patmos was during the reign of Nero. This would explain some of the passages, such as

Rev. 9:5-10 which refers to 5 months that Gen. Titus amassed his army before marching on Jerusalem

Romans 57-58 AD [written in winter at Corinth ]

[NOTE; there may have been one other Epistle he wrote to Corinth we do not have]

1 Corinthians 57 AD [Written prior to Pentecost]

2 Corinthians 57 AD. [Written from Macedonia on his journey towards Corinth]

Galatians 54 AD [They were gentiles who converted around 52 AD, he shows indignation that it is through Moses' Law that they were being taught they should be saved by the Judiazers]

Ephesians 63 AD [during his 1st imprisoned in Rome]

Philippians 63 AD [from Rome]

Colossians 63 AD [to counter the self appointed teachers who insisted on Judiac Observances]

1 Thessalonians [Considered the earliest letter wirtten from Corinth where he fled. He founded the Church in 51 AD] No date

2 Thessalonians NO date. [Because the 1st letter failed to quiet doubts, he wrote the second. They considered the 2nd coming of Christ at hand and did not desire to do works, thinking it useless.]

1 Timothy 63 AD [Timothy was uncircumcised but was circumsized to facilitate teaching among the Jews.
Timothy's father was Greek but his mother was Jewish.
This was a Pastoral letter and not a letter to a group or Church]

2 Timothy 66-67 AD. [He is in Rome for the second and last imprisonment time]

Titus 66-67 AD shortly after writing to Timothy [Titus was uncircumcised and Paul refused to allow the Judiazers demand he be circumsized. Titus was in charge of the Church in Crete. Another pastoral letter]

Philemon 63 AD [Wealthy master of his slave friend Onesimus. He was dispatching a letter to the Colossains, so he sent one to Philemon to deal kindly with the run away slave.]

Hebrews 63 AD [common view this was when he wrote this. Shortly after his release from jail. Written to counter the dangers of lapsing into Judiasm]

I used my Bible's notes. Actually alot of commentary I didnt want to write out by hand. :D

Galatians records events which happened seventeen years after his conversion. Three years after his conversion he went up to Jerusalem, and another three and he went up again to Jerusalem. People love to try to push Galatians really early, but a date of 41 would put Paul's conversion no later than 24 A.D., which really doesn't work chronologically. Assuming a conversion around 33-35, Galatians has to be no earlier than around 50 A.D.
