There was a tsunami in the Pacific after a 8.0-8.3 earthquake off the coast of Samoa but the other quake reported was an 7.6 in the Indian Ocean, which did not produce a tsunami, at least according to sources.

There is the distinct possibility that it happened numerous times in the past before there was a way of tracking and reporting events around the globe.

You have to have the right type of earthquake to generate a tsunami. The sea floor needs to thrust upwards. This is most likely what happened close to Samoa while the Indonesian quake may have been a horizontal movement or deeper in the earth.
