The East and the West teach slightly different things on marriage and remarriage, especially as it relates to the role of a bishop and the extent to which he's bound to the letter of the law. When did they start going their separate ways on this? More specifically, how far back can we go and find evidence that Eastern bishops were applying the practice of οικονόμια to divorce and remarriage and that people went through this process without getting an annulment?
