My all-time favorite is Dream Theater which is a progressive metal band. If your not familiar with that style it's based around the heavy metal sound, but with insane music technical stuff thrown in. Dream Theater is generally concidered one of the best bands musicly on the planet. If you want to sample them I would recommend the song 'A change of seasons' Don't let yourself be put off by the fact that it's 20 minutes long, because it never bores or gets repetative, it's a song I can listen to over and over again, and the 20 minutes feel more like 5.
