Many Christians enjoy some sort of 'devotional' book. Do you read a devotional? Tell us a little about it. Who wrote it? What did you particularly enjoy about it? What areas do you think it particularly helped you in? Was your devotional especially good for 'Charismatics' and 'Pentecostals'?

I used to have two devotional books that I have enjoyed reading:

Faith to Faith by Kenneth and Gloria Copeland

There was alo one that I used to have by Warren Wiersbe that I immensely enjoyed. It was extracts from his "BE" series made into daily devotionals. I can't remember the title at the moment. But it was very nourishing.

Oh, and I can't forget about Faith Food by the late Kenneth E. Hagin. Very good.

I love devotionals! I always wanted to write one. Some of the ones I've used are:

My Utmost for His Highest - Oswald Chambers
Living the Spirit Filled Life - Hayford and Middlebrook
A Gentle Spirit - selections from a many women, including Amy Carmichael, Elisabeth Elliot, Twila Paris, Ruth Bell Graham, Corrie ten Boom, etc.
The Practice of Kindness - This one is probably my favorite, and is more of a book of short meditations. There are entries from Christians and from people of other faiths, but it all focuses on examples of and thoughts about kindness. It's been a real blessing to me.

This year I purchased the new “A Year with C. S. Lewis: Daily Readings from His Classic Works” (Zondervan/HarperCollins)

I just read the following excerpt from “Mere Christianity” (on the July 29 page):

“I admit that this means loving people who have nothing lovable about them. But then, has oneself anything lovable about it? You love it simply because it is yourself. God intends for us to love all selves in the same way and for the same reason: but He has given us the sum ready worked out in our own case to show us how it works. We have then to go on and apply the rule to all other selves. Perhaps it makes it easier if we go on to remember that that is how He loves us. Not for any nice, attractive qualities we think we have, but just because we are the thing called selves. For really there is nothing else in us to love: creatures like us who actually find hatred such a pleasure that to give it up is like giving up beer and tobacco.”

Good stuff.

I really like the devotional of

COME AWAY, MY BELOVED by Francis J. Roberts (The Kings Press)
Truely Holy Spirit Inspired Words.

Sampling:
Safety In God's Will:

My will is not a place, but a condition. Do not ask Me where and when, but ask Me How? You will discover blessing in every place, and any place, if thy spirit is in tune with Me. No place nor time is more hallowed than another when ye are truly in love with Me. I direct every motion of they life, as the ocean bears a ship. Your will and intelligence may be at the helm, but divine providence and sovereignty are stonger forces. Ye can trust Me, knowing that any pressure I bring to bear upon they life is inititiated by My love, and I will not do even this except as ye are willing and desire.

Many a ship has sailed from port to port with no interference by Me, because Strong Will has been at the wheel.

But ye have put thy life into My keeping, and becasue ye are depending on Me for guidance and direction, I shall give it.

Move on steadily, and know that the waters that carry thee are the waters of My love and My kindness, and I will keep thee on the right course.
