What is that saying??? Sounds like a failed attempt to be meaningful/clever.

I don't know if you're one of those who feels content with non-Christian music because you can find spiritual meaning in secular music, but if you are and you can't find spiritual meaning in this, then you surely can't find any spiritual meaning from your typical rock song.

"can i relate to you the way you relate to me"

Trying to understand one's relationship with God, in this case I think it is particular to communication. I think most people struggle with how to relate to a supernatural being that they can't experience with their five senses.

"can you help me out with my chemistry"

Do you care about me? Even something as (seemingly) unimportant as my chemistry? Do you care about my daily concerns or am I wasting my time?

"i don't want to be percieved the way i am"

I don't want people to know the real me because, I suck. This could be a self-esteem question or a recognition that, on my own, I'm not good enough.

"i just want to be percieved the way I AM"

I want people to see me the way God sees me.

Who writes good songs?

Chris Rice is my favorite song writer hands down. (For those of you who havn't heard of him, he is a Christian artist.)

I don't listen to much contemporary Christian music mainly because I prefer the sound of country music. There really is an interesting blur between country and Christian music, in that many of the country artists are Christians playing music that could be in either catagory. Some examples are Randy Travis, Buddy Jewel, Lee Ann Womack, Phil Vassar, and Jimmy Wayne. Even Toby Keith says he's a Christian, although most of his music doesn't really seem to reflect that. On the other hand, Mercy Me's "I Can Only Imagine" has been a huge hit on L.A.'s local country station, KZLA.

I guess to answer the original question more directly, I don't listen to most of the bands you listed because I don't like the style of music, and I don't listen to secular music of that musical style either.

Christian music is flaky, fluffy, artificial, puff. End of story.

I wouldn't be so broad, but this post reminded me of Christian "Celtic" music. Some of it is ok, but most of it sounds so fake compared to the "real thing" that it's almost embarrasing.

That is quite a bit of information you are pulling from such vague lyrics. He could be referring to anything.

first of all...u dont have to have 15/15 songs on your cd be about God, some can just be fun songs. Guys like to have fun and thats wat some of the songs are about. They have very good lyrics in a lot of there songs. The reson why they dont succeed in mainstream is b/c of their lyrics. Just because some of there songs have no meanings at all doesnt mean they are bad.. most are about God

No, their is not a singular reason why they don't succeed in mainstream; and yes, one of the reasons is the lyrics. It is not as much that they mention God, but it is the fact that they have nothing real to say. In the eyes of nonchristians, they say the same thing in every song (which I can see). A band won't make it if they can't connect with the public. Writing songs over and over with the same theologically watered down message is applicable to few.

Here is an example of good lyrics that have many individual parts that don't necessarily make sense at glance, however, you can still see the theme and the point of the song.

"Black" by Pearl Jam:

Sheets of empty canvas, untouched sheets of clay
Were laid spread out before me as her body once did
All five horizons revolved around her soul
As the earth to the sun
Now the air I tasted and breathed has taken a turn
Ooh, and all I taught her was everything
Ooh, I know she gave me all that she wore
And now my bitter hands shake beneath the clouds
Of what was everything?
Oh, the pictures have all been washed in black, tattooed everything...
I take a walk outside
I'm surrounded by some kids at play
I can feel their laughter, so why do I sear
Oh, and twisted thoughts that spin round my head
I'm spinning, oh, I'm spinning
How quick the sun can, drop away
And now my bitter hands cradle broken glass
Of what was everything?
All the pictures have all been washed in black, tattooed everything...
All the love gone bad turned my world to black
Tattooed all I see, all that I am, all I'll ever be...yeah...
Uh huh...uh huh...ooh...
I know someday you'll have a beautiful life, I know you'll be a star
In somebody else's sky, but why
Why, why can't it be, why can't it be mine?

Here is an example of bad lyrics

"Sadie Hawkins Dance" -- Reliant K

All the girls in the bathroom talking who they gonna take to the Sadie Hawkins, My ears are burning but I kept in walking, smile on my face and air guitar rocking

Sadie Hawkins Dance in my khacki pants, theres nothing better, oh oh oh, girls ask the guys its always a surprise, thers nothing better baby do you like my sweater

sitting in the back of my next class napping gotta give a speech then bow to the clapping, told a funny joke got the the whole class laughin' think I got a tan from the light which I was basking.

Sadie Hawkins Dance, in my khaki pants, theres nothing better, oh, oh, oh, girls ask the guys its always a surprise ther nothing better baby do you like my sweater?

Scan the cafeteria for some good seating, I found a good spot by the cheerleaders eating, the quarterback asked me if I'd like a beating, I said that's one thing I wont be needing, and since I'm rather smart and cunning I took off down the next hsll running, only to get stopped by a girl so stunning only to get stopped by a girl so stunning, she sadi you're smooth, and good with talking, come with me, to the Sadie Hawkins

chorus (Sadie Hawkins Dance in my khaki pants....)
chorus

Sorry I was reading over the thread but Ima intervene a second here.
As was already said, any music any genre usually sounds 'the same' but that is why you broaden your horizon in that area.
I listen to christian and secular and I write both as well...there really, in some cases, is such a thin line between the two...POD for instance..christian yes, thought to be most of the time? no...evanecence as another..'used' to be christian...
Id rather personally listen to 'When I die Ill see something beautful, come and see me sometime" (pax217) than "we're all stars now in the dope show" (manson)..that is just me because to me the lyrics are key in the music..
