But doesn't Jesus say that if you desire a woman you have commited adultery??

Yes, in the New Covanent Jesus taught that. But the Ten C's are from the Old Covanent, before Jesus made that point; before He drew the connectio between desire and action. God had to be very explicit with the Jews from the OT; they thought in a very literal and plain sense and needed to be told very plainly. I think God was re-emphaising a similar point in a different way so as to cover more ground and be as thorough and clear as possible (sexual temptation happens to be a sin that afflicts the world in the most profound way; so it needs special attention).

Blessings,

Yes, by covering both action and desire, God made is abundantly clear to the Jews of the OT what the law was. If He left out one or the other, then of course human nature (esp. in that time) would be to find the "loophole" and exploit it.

That's my take on it anyway.

That sounds right-- you know I struggle with this every Lent-- it's like I give up something and exchange it for three other vices!

I emailed my SD- I'll post his response if it adds anything to what you have written!

Three Commandments.

LOL!!

You might appreciate this, Charlie-- my son has to learn the Commandments for school. He was having trouble remembering what came after #4-"HOnor thy Father and thy Mother.". I told him- it's "Thou shall not kill- You can remember because you wanna do number 4 so that your parents don't commit number 5!" He hasn't forgotten it since!

From what I understand, the sixth commandment prohibits explicit or actual adultery, the union between a man and a woman who isn't his wife and vice versa, for this is an offense against the sanctity of the sacrament of marriage. The ninth commandment prohibits one from desiring and planning how to obtain a woman who isn't your wife, including one who has already been given by God to another. The sixth refers to an act, the ninth refers more to desire or wanting.

Peace and Blessings
