What's sin and what's not?

I hear Christians talk about how everyone "sins" all the time. Maybe it's just that I'm not very critical of myself, but I don't see a lot of instances when I would do something immoral. Sure, I do lots of stupid things, but I generally don't do stuff with evil intentions. So... what do you think qualifies as being a sin?

They generally only consider it blasphemy if you're a Christian and say you don't sin. If you're a non-Christian, then it's ignorance of sin, i.e. a malfunctioning conscience. Of course, there are different views on this. It used to be thought that sins were evil acts, not just ordinary mistakes like feeling certain emotions or swearing.

While I'm thinking of it, I don't really see the problem with swearing in front of people who don't find it offensive. Context and intentions would seem to be most important... if you lie for the greater good, then I think that would be best. Letting your fear of dogmatic sins prevent you from doing the right thing is more of a sin than lying itself. Wouldn't you think?

Sin is when we violate the law as given to Moses and written about in the first 5 books of the Bible:
Genesis, Exodus, Leviticus, Numbers, Deuteronomy.

There's so much there, that it's pretty much a sure thing that you've violated the law somewhere.

The point is not to be good or to follow the law.
The point is to understand you just aren't perfect and you need God's help.

Very well said, Merlin

And adding to that, sin is also to not be assured that God's help is at hand

To sin is to stray from the will of God, one way or another. Though many Christians interpret this as "doing bad things", it doesn't necessarily have the legalistic implication.

Is is the situation where we try to be God instead of letting God be God.

When you sin, your intentions may not be evil, but most of the time they are selfish in some way because it's what you want rather than God and also what's in your (or what you believe/think is) best interest a lot of times when you sin.

well to me there is only one sin...stupidity if you think before you act you wont end up doing "sins"

Actually, that's false. People sin w/ their eyes wide open all the time and sin doesn't equal stupid acts because a lot of sins seem right and appropriate in the world today.

I think being unloving and hurting others qualifies as a sin.
