My little sister is 13 years old and I love her to death. I play with her all the time, I help her with whatever she needs, and I just try to be a good big brother to her. I am worried about one thing though, if she will ever be able to reach the kingdom of heaven. My sister has down syndrome and today we went to something called "21 Downs Walk" where you walk a mile for people with down syndrome. While walking the mile, I started to pray, and after I was done, I looked at my sister and had a terrible thought. She can't speak, she can't do most of the things that a common 6 year old could do. I started to think that if she can't accept Jesus Christ due to her disability, will she ever be able to reach heaven?

But I also thought that if she was made in God's image, then why would she have this severe down syndrome? I just can't seem to think of any logical explanation and would like some thought on this subject. Thank you

We are all made in God's image. The problem though is that we live in a fallen world - meaning that everything, including our genetic makeup, is tainted by the effects of sin. What was created perfect is not perfect anymore. That's why some people get cancer, die in natural disasters, are permanently affected by conditions such as downs syndrome. My brother has a mental condition as well, and the number of times I've thought "Why God? Please, please I know you can heal this! Why him?" One thing non-Christians are completely wrong about is thinking that God picks certain people to give these awful conditions to because he is cruel. It may seem like it sometimes, but that's not true. We live in a fallen world, and until we reach heaven nothing will be perfect. God does things for reasons that our reason can not understand. But his ways are higher than ours - while we may never understand why certain things happen we need to remember and can know for sure that they happen for a reason and that God is in control every step of the way. As for your sister, all I can say is that God is in control. I know it doesn't feel like that. We just need to trust in his mercy and grace.

I believe that she probably will reach heaven, at least I hope disabled people will make it to heaven... Her mind isn't the same as ours though, she can't really make the same choices that we can though... So, I think her mind probably remains uncorrupted by this world, and she probably can still have an understanding of Yeshua and who he is, I believe that's put in all of us at birth, an innate sense of the Savior and the Father.

And, made in G-d's image is probably more like, mind, body, and spirit.
Yeshua is the body.
G-d is the mind.
The Holy Spirit is the spirit.
I think that's how the image of G-d works, she still has that in her.

The Holy Spirit is in all of us. Even if your sister can not physically accept Jesus Christ as the Son of God, she can still feel God's presence in her soul and live a good life spiritually. I know Down's Syndrome kids, they are so innocent how could any one think they would go to Hell? Could you imagine your life now without your sister just the way she was? She is a blessing from the Lord.

agree with your post except the bottom.

Down syndrome is not a blessing. It's more like a curse, as is any kind of mental or physical disability.

This touched my heart. Here's what the truth is: She is evil. It sounds harsh, but Romans 1-3 proves how evil we are. Isaiah 64:6 says that it might seem like we do good, but it's still unacceptable to G-d. You see, asking Jesus into your heart isn't what saves you. That isn't even in the Bible.

You are saved only by faith -- by believing. Faith is a gift from G-d (Ephesians 2:8). It is by faith we are justified. G-d takes our heart of stone and gives us a new one. A softened one that will weep over sin, and is sensitive to the cross. Bless Him all powerful Master! We are slaves to Him who is supreme.

The point I'm tying to make is that G-d can save ANYONE. Even babies. John the Baptist was converted in the womb. Faith isn't of ourselves, it is given to us by G-d. Hope this helps.

EDIT: The gifts of G-d are irrevocable (Romans 11:29). If G-d wants to save someone He will.

Repent and Believe.

How could you say that? I severly doubt that a 13 year old with downs syndrome has done anything to deserve eternal hell. Not the mention being crowned 'evil'. Also the part about god wanting to save someone, does that mean that he picks favorites?

According to the bible, your sister is going to hell. According to reason, she doesnt deserve that. Nobody does.

Are you serious? You're calling mankind evil? When we were made in the image and likeness of God? Mankind may have fallen away from God, for a while, after Adam and Eve, but that's why Jesus came. We're not "evil" anymore, now we actually have a chance of getting into Heaven.

"You are saved only by faith -- by believing", this is really silly. Only by faith? Satan not only has faith in God's existence but knows he exists, so faith is not the only factor in getting into Heaven, good works and keeping away from sin are just as important.

Finally, God doesn't judge us on a strict one size fits all type of basis, He looks at our individual lives, sees our situations, and judges us accordingly. Do you think that some kind-hearted and good working Aborigine in Australia who has never even heard of Christianity, do you think God will send him straight down to Hell because no one had ever told him about Christianity? No He will look at this Aborigine's life and he will judge justly. Same goes for this Down's Syndrome girl.

Works prove our faith in accordance with James chapter two, but they do not merit our salvation.
They deserve hell. Have you not read Romans 3:23. I suggest doing a Biblical study on the Doctrine of original sin.

Man is constituted a sinner by his relationship with Adam Psa 51:5; Psa 58:3; Rom 5:18-19 He is therefore unable
To do anything good
Gen 6:5; Job 15:14-16; Psa 130:3; Psa 143:2; Pro 20:9; Ecc 7:20; Isa 64:6; Jer 13:23; John 3:19; Rom 3:9-12; Jam 3:8; 1John 1:8
To believe in God (or come to him)
John 6:44; John 6:65; John 8:43-45; John 10:26; John 12:37-41
To understand the truth
John 14:17; 1Cor 2:14
To seek God
Rom 3:10-11
He is dead in sins Gen 2:16-17; John 3:5-7; Eph 2:1-3; Col 2:13 He is blinded and corrupt in his heart Gen 6:5; Gen 8:21; Ecc 9:3; Jer 17:9; Mark 7:21-23; John 3:19-21; Rom 8:7-8; Eph 4:17-19; Eph 5:8 He is captive to sin and Satan John 8:34; John 8:44; Rom 6:20; 2Tim 2:25-26; Tit 3:3; 1John 5:19 He performs actions freely according to his nature, but his nature is wholly evil Job 14:4; Mat 7:16-18; Mat 12:33; Mark 7:21-23; Jam 1:13-14

We are all accountable for our sins. We are without excuse. Read the book of Romans. Great book. You will learn that no man has any excuse for sin.

God is holy and is Love. If He loves He must also hate (Psalm 5:5). For example: I love babies, therefore I must hate abortion.

Have any of you actually heard the true gospel?

Whoa, whoa, whoa, whoa, cool it, man. The majority of your posts very much disturb me. You don't know what's in someone's heart. It's not your place to judge whether you're the only one on this forum who's heard the true gospel or is a real Christian. Everyone is an individual with an individual relationship with God; we can't all be you. I'm completely pro-life, so let's get that out of the way, but I disagree with your statement that works "deserve hell." Are you saying that someone should be put there because they feed the homeless? That's a work. What if someone witnesses to a group of troubled teens, or builds a house for someone in need without compensation? What if someone counsels a bitter heart? Are all of these works evil in your eyes, or is your philosophy on the Christian walk so narrow that you cannot accept any other method to spiritual growth than the ones you practice? I know this post might come off as a little brash or presumptuous, and I apologize, and I also know that you won't change your ways. I respect that and I'm not asking you to. I'm a bit opinionated myself - I'm sure that's the reason I took the time to write this little novella and you've probably already figured that out. Just keep in mind that you're in the teens section and most of us are still young and new in our relationships with Christ. We all come from different backgrounds and we're all making an effort. You should be proud of these teens who choose a life with Christ instead of rebelling and living the life that beckons from outside of God's path. Once again, I apologize for my presumptuous statements and I hope this doesn't cause bitter air between us; let me know if you were offended and we can communicate about it. Next time I promise I'll be more civil - I've simply been pushed to the breaking point by your posts. I don't have a problem with your beliefs, I just feel that you could present them a little less offensively. If you take a minute to explore the world below your high horse, you might see that people use unique methods to live in Christ and that you're not the only one who's picked up a Bible. You're making the teens section less fun and accessible than it's supposed to be.

I wasn't saying that anyone wasn't a true Christian, but I'm only going by what the Bible says.
I'm trying to be as gentle as I can, but the proof must be preached.
Isaiah 64:6 says that our good deeds are sin to God. Atheists do not have righteous deeds. I hope that you watched to video above, it's a great look at the character of God in the Gospel.

Gotcha. I guess we just have different views on what's important and what isn't, which happens often. Personally I don't see anything wrong with doing good deeds. Yes, faith is the most important thing - without it, life is empty. However, I don't think God hates it when we help each other and take care of each other too. In fact, Jesus himself said that we should do unto others what we'd have them do unto us. I will always believe that is important.

I didn't watch the video yet - super slow Internet connection. I'll be out of this bowl of trees in a week or so and then I'll check it out. :)

I agree with what was said earlier that the earth is cursed and as such bad things will happen. God does not make us sick or bring bad things we either bring them on ourselves or they happen because of the earth we live in. I do believe however that people like your sister will go to heaven. I have heard testimonies of people who have died and gone to heaven and come back and talked about all the children that are there waiting and learning. For instance i dont believe that a baby who was aborted will go to hell and some of the most loving "christian" (for lack of a better word) people i know have downs syndrome or autism.
Overall I think that God sees each heart individually and he knows that some are not able to respond like veryone else and hes not going to condemn them for something they had no control over.

Oh, how dramatically ironic! God curses this poor girl with a severe genetic defect, thus rendering her incapable of understanding his vitally important teachings, which dooms her to spend eternity in hellish agony!
Unable to understand the significance of her punishment as she drifts in an endless sea of fire and brimstone.
Yet, they worship him, who would have been feared as the cruelest and most evil dictator had he been born as a human, and call him God.

I'm not saying this because she is my sister, but I agree with SDBaptist. I agree that mankind is evil. Our good works are like filthy rags to the Lord. We are saved by repenting of our sins, not just by tongue, but by heart (truly meaning it) and by putting our trust and faith in Jesus Christ that he died for us and paid our sin with His blood.

Sadly, on valentines day, 2012, my sister passed away after a 4 day fight with multiple health problems involving her intestines and organs. I believe she went to heaven (again, I'm not just saying this because she is my sister) because she was unable to comprehend mostly anything besides knowing who mommy, daddy and dale dale are. (Dale Dale being me) and because she was unable to talk besides a few select words such as "hi". She did not have the ability to repent or trust in Jesus. I'm not saying that she was sinless or anything, because everyone is guilty of sin, but I'm saying that she could do nothing about it and no one could help her even begin to understand anything at all in the bible.

I respect everyone's responses and I'm thankful for your help. I know I haven't been on this website for awhile but if any of you ever read this, just know that I'm thankful.

Lol, you must be calling God cruel.
1. Why would he enclose any of his creations if they don't emit any harm to everything around them?( compare a child with down syndrome and a religious murderer. Who's gonna go to hell first? )
2. Lol your sister can't speak therefore she can't accept jezus? It's like saying: LOL a guy with no hands and a degree in computer engineering.

Think about it
