  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

What was the high Sabbath?

Moses commanded the weekly Sabbaths in Ex 20:

8 “Remember the Sabbath day, to keep it holy. 9Six days you shall labor, and do all your work, 10a but the seventh day is a Sabbath to the LORD your God. On it you shall not do any work.
Moses also commanded other festival days of rest. E.g., Leviticus 23:

5 In the first month, on the fourteenth day of the month at twilight,
i.e. at the end of Nisan 14

is the LORD’s Passover. 6 And on the fifteenth day of the same month is the Feast of Unleavened Bread to the LORD; for seven days you shall eat unleavened bread. 7 On the first day you shall have a holy convocation; you shall not do any ordinary work.
Moses commanded that the day after Nisan 14 was to be a day of rest, whatever day of the week it fell on. Actually, the term high Sabbath is not in the Bible. The confusion came from John 19:

31 Since it was the day of Preparation, and so that the bodies would not remain on the cross on the Sabbath (for that Sabbath was a high day), the Jews asked Pilate that their legs might be broken and that they might be taken away.
Jesus was crucified on Friday, Nisan 15, a Paschal day of rest. Nisan 16 was a weekly Saturday Sabbath day. There was a Sabbath day followed by another Sabbath day. I suppose that one can define the second Sabbath day as a High Sabbath day.

Speaking in terms of agreement with your conclusion, with the crucifixion on the 15th, that Saturday Sabbath was the 16th, which was first fruits, the waving of the sheaf, and the first day in the count towards Pentecost. Ergo, that Sabbath WAS a high day, filled with rituals.

I understand it to mean that when Holy days of celebration coincide with a sabbath day, it becomes a High Sabbath day. So for eg, a Saturday is Sabbath but when Passover or any other holy day occurs on a certain day it is also a day of rest. A high Sabbath day.

Leviticus 23 speaks of these days, when no ordinary work is to be done. A day of rest.
