  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

What was Nintendo thinking?

I think their decision is pure genius. At first I was shocked, and needed some air. After I got some air, thought about it, prayed about it - I realized what a smart name it really is.

1. Look at the media coverage. Nintendo paid very little money and going into the E3 they are the talk of it. There are pro people, and there are con people, but the word about Wii is being spread.

2. Like I said in the other thread weeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeee denotes fun, and subliminally people will equate Wii with fun.

3. Nintendo is going a different direction from the other two. They have completely re-thought/re-tooled, etc every aspect of their strategy. So this shift in the naming convention makes sense.

Great point!

This name sounds a little strange, especially after refering to it as the Revolution for so long, but I don't think it is a bad idea.

We're kind of used to it now, but Nintendo DS didn't sound too good the first time I heard it either...turns out it is the best gaming machine I have bought in at least 10 years and I've bought quite a few.

And Nintendo has shot itself in the foot. I mean, my goodness. They're taking a risk with the controller, but now they've done it. Oh, and as far as attention goes, a kid who burps in the middle of class gets attention. It doesn't mean he gets respect.

You have no idea how much other forums (not on CF) are getting flamed with stuff like this.;)

Your right, people will get used to it.

The coolest slogan I have seen thus far on other boards is:
We are the Knights who say... "Wii!"

I tell you what.. Every good Wii domain name was taken within 30 minutes of the release... I managed to grab 2 nice ones. This thing is getting a lot of free press. The name will be accepted (eventually).

I still won't buy the console though, at least I don't think I will.

Some are claiming that the name is a hoax. While I don't think it is, I still don't really care WHAT they call it. I don't buy a console for the little logo on the front, I buy it for the games. And if the Revolution/Wii has the NES, SNES, N64, Gamecube, Genesis, and Turbografx libraries available to it, plus Metroid Prime 3, Zelda, and other new titles from classic Nintendo franchises, then I'll certainly be picking it up.

The article suggesting that the name Wii is a hoax is here:

I think it would be sheer genius if it is a hoax and I would like to think that is true and I would have to take my hat off to the people at Nintendo.

It is a truely awful, woeful, hideous name and they aren't going to capture any gamers that don't have a Nintendo system. They'll laugh at it - as is happening.

The only thing it does well is get peoples attention.

I know that to gamers who currently have a Nintendo won't care about the name but those who don't will care. They won't even look into something with a name that is THAT childish.

Oh well - it doesn't matter to me because I'm gonna get a PS3!

Are you kidding me?
This was a stroke of genius on Nintendo's part. The internet is blazing with this. Look at any forum or chatroom, and I guarantee someone will be talking about it. It's just very, very good advertising.
And yeah, it'll take a bit of getting used to, but think about it. How skeptical were you when you first heard Xbox, N64, or Playstation. Didn't think it would catch on, huh?

I gotta say, the name sounds pretty dumb at first. However, it's grown on me, and in retrospect, it's genius. Think about how easily you can put Wii into a conversation. PS2 and Xbox360 clutter up the conversation, but Wii can be thrown into anything, even things that has nothing to do with it. "We are going to the movies." Right there, the word "we" reminds you of Wii and your mind goes to it if only for a second. It's simple to say, easy to right, and universal. We love Wii. :p

Also take into consideration the fact that parents are going to buying the system for thier kids, not just adults buying their own. Now, a parent is not going to easily remember you want a Xbox360 or a Playstation 3, but if you ask for Wii, the name is easily to remember, recognizable, etc.
