I'm a new born Christian and one of my questions is that what type of music should I listen to? I listen to jazz music. Would it be consider a sin if I listen to jazz music.

The Holy Spirit will begin to show things that do not Glorify God. ie: certain music, tv, radio, movies, etc..

Your jazz music is probably just fine !

Most "new Christians" have not yet experienced what is called the "baptism of the Holy Spirit" which unlike the water baptism,comes from God and not a clergyman.When people reach a state of spiritual maturity,which can happen at most ages,God sends His Holy Spirit to them to guide them toward salvation.The music the Holy Spirit most responds to is called "praise and worship music" and sometimes people receive the baptism of the Holy Spirit while they are listening to this type of music.So the question to be asked is why should you waste your time listening to music that is totally meaningless when you can listen to music that will improve your chances of receiving the salvation required baptism of the Holy Spirit?

There is an excellent commercial free internet radio station that broadcasts praise and worship music 24 hours a day.Here is the link to their website:

I ask would yourself if it is "something Jesus would listen to" ..
I mostly listen to just christian music, there is a great variaty.. my husband still likes his old music from before he was saved.. most of the time I don;t like to listen to that "old music" because it sadens me to hear the lyrics, but I admit there is some I like too, BUT, if I listen to it to much my thoughts are not what they should be..

This is not sound doctrine. First, Jesus said the Holy Spirit comes to all who believe in John 7:38-39. Not just those who are "good enough." Second, there is no Biblical evidence of your statement that the Holy Spirit likes one genre of music over another. He is the third Person of God, not some force that can be conjured. God can reach anybody, anywhere, for any reason. He is definitely present when people come together in true worship, but listening to a radio stream is not the same thing as going to church. God can reach people listening to this music, but He can also reach people in their day-to-day lives. He has reached people in nature. He has reached people listening to Christian rock.

The general rule for what is acceptable for music and other entertainment is in Philippians 4:8.

"Finally, brothers, whatever is true, whatever is noble, whatever is right, whatever is pure, whatever is lovely, whatever is admirable—if anything is excellent or praiseworthy—think about such things."

At the same time, you shouldn't obsessively nitpick everything. If you do that, you will have defeated the purpose of the verse because you will always be looking for the bad in everything.

Jazz is great! No problems there.

I myself listen to a variety of music, but as I get older, I've been leaning more towards the sounds of the Big Band sounds from the 20's, 30's and 40's. Classic. Oh, and I love the sounds of cheesy Euro pop/dance. :D

I will agree with most of what twistedsketch said.

Test what it is saying against scripture.
Some have said, just Christian music, however just because a song is labeled "Christian" doesn't mean it is automatically going to uplift you. There is plenty of Christian music out there that just annoys the pants off of me because its just loud and meaningless.
I listen to a lot of music, secular and Christian. I think it is good to be familiar with the culture you are in so that you can relate to them and understand how they think so you can better present the Gospel to them. But that doesn't mean immerse yourself in music that is harmful to your mind. Make sure you are at a point of spiritual maturity where you can handle what you hear in the world's music. Most of it isn't pretty, but it symbolizes what a lot of people feel without Christ.

There is no "wrong" music as others have stated.

I listen to anything from Country to 80's Rock
(Shania Twain, Tim McGraw, Rascal Flatt's, Gun's N Roses, Bon Jovi, The The, Jasan McKoy, Keith Urban)

It's to what suits one's taste. I need music that moves me, yet I also dont care for music where I dont understand (can't hear) the lyrics.

No, its not a sin to listen to jazz. Have you considered contemporary christian music? I would listen to music that are uplifting and have uplifting lyrics to them. For example, I wouldn't listen to music that talk about drugs ,violence, sex etc. Why? Because its not exactly edifying music for you or your soul.

I listen to contemp. christian, jazz, secular neutral music- that doesn't talk about getting drunk - and so just plain junk, classical. You can listen to anything - but ungodly junk.
