  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

What The Lord Needs

It was a donkey that the Lord said that He had need of, when He wanted to ride into Jerusalem (Luke 13:31). That enables us to understand what the Lord is looking for even today as He builds the church (Jerusalem).

He is not looking for the clever, the intelligent, the noble and the mighty (1 Corinthians 1:26-28). On the contrary, He is looking for those who are weak and despised, and who have small thoughts about themselves. He is looking for donkeys! Even those who are gifted are not needed, if they are unwilling to be donkeys in the eyes of the world.

When we are truly humble, we will be willing to let anyone ride on us for the sake of Christ, even as that donkey was.

When we are truly humble, we will never desire to be anything other than an ordinary brother or sister in the church. We shall not desire any place or position or respect or honour as an elder brother, in the eyes of others.

When we are truly humble, we will never get offended with anyone for any matter. Getting offended is one of the clearest symptoms of pride.

God grant that we shall qualify for the Lord to ride on. He needs donkeys even today.

This really hits home with me today...I have been getting some ouchy lessons in this department of "pride".

With what shall I come to the Lord
and bow myself before the God on high?

Shall I come to Him with burnt offerings,
with yearling calves?

Does the Lord take delight in thousands of rams,
in ten thousand rivers of oil?

Shall I present my firstborn for my rebellious acts,
the fruit of my body for the sin of my soul?

He has told you,
O man,
what is good;

And what does the Lord require of you
but to do justice, to love kindness,

And to walk humbly with your God?

Micah 6:6-8
I think I forget what my life is "really" about sometimes...it is about walking with Him...I get way out of line with the "performance" things...even prayer and study becomes performance in stead of "life" with Jesus.

Granted there is significant instruction in Scripture to elevate humility to such a lofty position, and as believers we are instructed to "humble ourselves" that the Lord will lift us up. However, G-d chooses whom He will to accomplish His will, which is the most important thing. Numbers tells us, "Now the man Moses was very humble, more than any man who was on the face of the earth. And certainly, when we read through Numbers and all the times that he inteceded for the people of Israel after they sinned, this is borne out.

However, if we reject someone as a leader because we perceive that he isn't as humble as we think a man of G-d should be we may actually be thwarting G-d's will. Elijah and Elisha were both very strong, dynamic personalities who were exactly what G-d's plans called for at that point in time. Would someone fit your idea of being humble if he asks of G-d that he be granted a double-portion of the ability to perform miracles than did his teacher, Elijah?

Look at the portions of Paul's writings were he describes himself prior to his conversion experience. Sounds like someone filled with pride to me. Does a man who fits your idea of humility have the fortitude to have the kind of forceful ministry that the Apostle Paul had? Don't get me wrong, I agree with what you have said about humility for the most part. However, we have to keep in mind the G-dly humility is our strength under G-d's control. Remember what Paul wrote about his thorn in the flesh, he prayed that it be removed, but was told by G-d that its purpose was to keep him humble.

Good post vinc

I wrote this on the same subject.

Am I Just An Ass!

People use me to carry their load, even themselves. They think I still follow the carrot on a stick. Some tie me up and leave me. Some beat me if I don't move at their command. To some I'm simply a means of transportation.

There was one though. He sent his disciples to bring me. I carried him with joy, I still do. I carry the Saviour, the wisdom, the answers, the cure. I carry him within my heart. I’m willing to be an Ass for Jesus...

This is the "heart" of humility "for me"...carrying the Lord Jesus...sanctifying Him as Lord in my heart.

I also see Dmckay's point. We are and can be very fruitful according to our call and purpose in the Lord...even our temperments can serve Him.

There is also something called false humbleness and false humility and God can clearly see through this in us Coz He can read each one of our hearts. Elijah was a fiery Prophet but yet was humble in his heart. There are human beings whose outward disposition may appear arrogant or proud but they can still be found humble at heart. There is also a saying that most of us know "Man sees the outward actions but God sees the intentions".

Clever people exhibit false humbleness and false humility and usually get away scot free and are also able to impress the world.

However, a spiritual christian who is Spirit-filled and rooted and grounded in the Word of God and who knows God and sees the world and fellow-humans as God sees them can also see through that false humbleness.

Since, we cannot read the hearts of human beings, we may not be able to assess correctly whether someone is humble or not. And we all make the mistake of entering into that complex web of bringing down the pride in our fellow-humans without even thinking that we might have wrongly judged our fellow-humans.

But, God is the ultimate Judge and He is the one who can truly decide who is humble and who is proud. God only can decide whom to use and whom not to use.

Thank you Vinc! Excellent thread! It hits home with me this week because a person on the forum hijacked two threads and was extremely hostile and critical of others who posted. I believe pride and arrogance may have been the root of that person's problem. May God convict those who need convicting, humble those who need humbling, and lift those who need lifting. God bless everyone.
